A Film and Social Lawn Bowls

This afternoon we attended one of the Summer Film Festival films entitled 'I, Daniel Blake'. This was touted as a 'social realist drama about a disabled Newcastle carpenter and his struggles with bureaucratic red tape'. I thought of fellow member Arthur Chappell and all the hoops he has to jump through to get his work benefit entitlements.
Set in modern-day Britain, it brought to mind the impersonal treatment of Australian unemployed and the problems they face when trying to get anywhere within the welfare system. A very harrowing film but well worthwhile viewing. And now we've just returned from our social lawn bowls evening. It was a fun evening. Four of us played another team of four and we were all beginners. We managed to win by 13 points to 8 so we were pretty pleased. No doubt we'll face new challenges next week.

@LadyDuck This film should be compulsory for CentreLink which is our agency for welfare and job-seekers. Vince has stood behind a person who had not money whatsoever to tide him over the weekend. It is criminal how these people are treated.

Thanks. We have three more weeks to go. Perhaps we'll win another one.

I often wish I could drop by a few mylotters for some pickmeuptea, and he is one of those I'd love to meet up with (you two and Lani also)

@JudyEv I get quite excited just thinking of a fellow mylotter playing Bowls somewhere else in the world. Australia have apparently beautiful bowling greens please share a photo soon so I can visualize your games on Friday. This is one of our club greens on Sunday - it was a Provincial Day and the rain steadily dripped all day

@Inlemay I forgot to take my camera. I'll take it this week. I was surprised how many myLotters asked me more about it. I thought everyone would have had a general idea but it seems not. And thanks for adding the photo. Hopefully some of those querying lawn bowls will see it.

I've never done lawn bowling. It looks kind of fun.

Have you ever had a game of carpet bowls? It's played inside on carpet (duh) but the balls are weighted like those in lawns bowls. You have to bowl out to the side and the weight curves the balls back to the kitty/jack/small ball. It's a bit tricky but it's fun.

@teamfreak16 I goofed big time. Ten-pin bowling is very big over there isn't it? Well, it's nothing like that.
Inlemay put a photo of a bowling green in her comment if you want to check it out.

@JudyEv - No, that doesn't sound familiar. I've loved to bowl since I was a kid, so any variation sounds fun.

Congrats on winning and by quite the lead! Now, what exactly is lawn bowling?

It's played on a flat lawn or synthetic area and you roll balls (bowls) towards a smaller one (the kitty or jack). The bowls are weighted on one side so you aim out to the left (or right) and the ball curves back and hopefully finishes up next to the small ball. We played with eight people and had two balls each. We'd roll them down to the other side of the green, count which side got the most closest to the kitty then do the same back again. We did this for 13 times then added the scores.

The red tape fiasco is seen everywhere including India and I am sure it is worst here.
What is the name of that tree - it seems there is no leaf on that tree.

It's a Melaleuca or paper-bark. Some years they bloom really well.

The other team were all beginners too. Next week we'll play a different team but there are still more beginners teams so perhaps we'll get lucky again. :)

The director of I, Daniel Blake is Ken Loach who is known for stark realism and often employing amateur actors.

It was indeed. Today will be a bit of a repeat. A Nicole Kidman film then an outdoor concert at night.
