Movie Review - Ben-Hur

I really didn't know what to expect of the new Ben-Hur movie, but I was not disappointed. It's not the same movie, in that it is still Ben-Hur, it still has the chariot race, Judah Ben-Hur still goes to the galley's, his mother and sister still end up as lepers, and it still has Messala. Other than that it is a whole new movie. It is and is not a remake. It's a remake because the theme is the same and the names are the same. It's a whole new movie because the story line takes it in a slightly different direction. Have you ever wanted to take a story you weren't quite happy with and make a new story out of an old plot? That's what executive producers Roma Downy and her husband Mark Burnett helped to produce. I've heard Ben-Hur didn't get the ratings they expected. I think people were expecting the same movie starring Charlton Heston and Steven Boyd. It's not, and you should not expect it to be the same. New writers, new producers, new actors. I thoroughly enjoyed Ben-Hur and I give it two thumbs up. Morgan Freeman is excellent as the sheikh who put in the wager against Messala and trained Judah for the race. If you have not seen the new movie, I highly recommend it. Just don't expect the same movie you were used to. Thanks for reading.

The original one is amazing, but the remake is kinda weird and boring.

It's almost impossible to re-stage the chariot race which was a real filmed race. Today, it's CGI.

@JohnRoberts Yeah. The original beats the remake so easily.

Why would anyone expect the same movie? I actually think I liked the newer True Grit better than the John Wayne one. Both were good, though.

I haven't seen this version and probably never will. But if you ever have the chance, watch the 1925 versions starring Ramon Navarro. It is a wonderful film. I'd love to see the 1907 short but TCM hasn't played it yet to my knowledge. Does Jesus still cure Ben Hur's mom and sister of leprosy in this version?

@dragon54u Yes. I have seen the 1925 version - that was the silent one, wasn't it? I know I saw a silent film of it. It was good.

I have seen the 1925 version. Francis X. Bushman played Messala. They made it look pretty good despite primitive special effects back then.

I felt that way about the last round planet of the apes movie, Rise of the Planet of the Apes, it wasn't the old movie by any standards, which in my book is good, I HATED the old versions. Though I didn't totally like this either, J does, so I watched it, and will watch Dawn of the planet of the apes and later War too

I wondered about the new version of that movie. I haven't seen it. Now, I'll give it a try. I liked the old, but then I'm a Charlton Heston fan.

@Jessicalynnt Probably. Though it has been on TV often enough through the years. I think it came out the year I was born.

Yes, beign a writer sometimes I see something in a movie that I would have done differently. I like the original movie, not remakes.

We have seen it and it is different from the original. I must admit that I like this ending. I agree that Morgan Freeman did a very good job as the sheikh.

You should never epect remakes to be the same as the first time. Did you see the remake of Planet of the Apes. The first one was a lot better.

I sometimes wonder why they make these remakes but I guess they have their reasons.
