Lying to my grandchild

I remember when I was little there was an ice cream truck that would go around the neighborhoods. It dinged its bell and most kids ran out to get a treat. Not me and my brother, though. We could not afford that treat most of the time so we went in the backyard or inside so we wouldn't have to advertise our poverty. Now we have an ice cream truck that plays music that goes around the neighborhood. My granddaughter has sometimes seen it but we play in the back yard rather than the un-fenced front yard. I tell her it's the music truck, bringing music to people who don't have radios or other means to enjoy music. She has no idea there is ice cream on that truck! She is only 3 so I think she'll believe it awhile longer. Because we can't afford the outrageous prices on that ice cream truck and also because I don't want her having a lot of sweets. Have you ever done something like this, made up a story to cover up the truth for the good of your child or grandchild?

I suppose most of us have made up stories for our children. Sometimes they are like yours and the icecream truck and others are about the tooth fairy

Strangely enough, we have not told her about Santa, only the legend of St. Nicholas and the story of the Wise Men to explain why we give gifts. She doesn't think Santa comes down with gifts but she does know it's the birthday of a very important person. She loves the birthday cake! I had such fun playing the tooth fairy when my boys were small!

I'd almost forgotten about the tooth fairy! I haven't been around kids much for a while I guess.

There is always the one about babies being born under cabbages but I guess that has REALLY gone out of fashion now.

@dragon54u It's amazing in this day and age how ignorant some people are - not meaning 'ignorant' in an unkind way. There is still a lot of misinformation being bandied about. And you're right - reproduction is too important to lie about.

@LoriAMoore Best to sit down at this point Lori. No, the storks don't bring them, they don't grow under cabbages, they umm, err, ... Oh sorry, there's someone at the door! Gotta go.

Many times when my kids insist on to buy things which are out of our budget we make stories that the thing they are willing to buy is not good enough/worth to buy.

I'm already starting to try to explain quality to her but at 3 she doesn't really grasp the concept of money.

We were on our way to Phoenix one morning when I spotted a rabbit that had been hit by a car on the side of the highway. I stopped and picked it up, and we turned around and took it to the sanctuary a few miles from our apartment. While the kids were using the bathroom one of the keepers told me that its injuries were so severe that they had to euthanize it. We told the kids that they would give it the best care possible, which is technically true. Sometimes the best care they can provide is easing the animal's suffering.

That was a wonderful thing for you to do, both for the rabbit and your children. Why burden them with sorrow? As it is, they will remember that subconsciously and watch for animals on the road when they themselves learn to drive. There are so many rabbits here in Phoenix, I have nearly hit one several times. The city keeps growing and growing, out and out, never UP, and the poor animals' homes keep getting destroyed and they have to move. Soon there will be no place for them to live. Anyway, thank you for your kindness to that bunny.

She's only 3 and I'm just beginning to teach her about money, how we get it and how we spend it and why we can't get certain things. I think she'll be ready to hear that in a few months but not now. I don't want her growing up feeling deprived like I did or being insecure as I was about money.

Never and wouldn't consider it either. If you lie about that, what else do you lie to her about?

True. But I would not want her to feel as I did as a child who could not afford to buy ice cream.

@dragon54u We didn't have a lot of money when my kids were little, and they knew that when they did get an ice cream off the truck it was a special treat.
