Now, this meeting assumes significance. Trump will likely ask other NATO members to share more financial burden, and may be reduce US role in NATO. Also, whether he will push for closer ties with Russia remains to be seen. Here is the full news:
Trump, elected on a pledge to push NATO members to increase their funding to the western alliance to ease the financial burden on the US, agreed to meet alliance leaders in Europe in May in a phone call on Sunday with NATO secretary general Jens Stoltenber

France already left the NATO from 1966 to 2007, and its return is effective only since 2009. Many politicians were against, including Hollande, Bayrou, the Ecologist Party, etc, but it would be not easy to leave now, except if Trump helps a bit. I think we should better rely on an European army than on NATO, but until now the UK was against an European army...

@LadyDuck It will depend of countries : France has an important army that can be reduced in a way that the participation to an EU army would not cost a cent more. It is not true for Germany for historical reasons, but many other countries can do the same than France. I do not know the importance of the army in Italy today ? I think it is the way to go, because NATO is at risk to disappear with Trump.

@topffer I think that NATO as it is now it's not very useful. I think that if Europe wants an European army it should be no more a problem now as UK left, but I am not sure it's the right moment to ask to the EU partners to spend more money.

I think he's pushing for everyone in nato to spend the agreed 2% of gdp on defence. To be fair america does have the biggest military by far in nato but that's their choice. Things is with the US...look at where their bases are located and then look at chinese and russian bases. China sticks to their area and russia to theirs but the US is a global military power. I'd suspect trump wants to reign that in.
