Food for Kids Program

I think I've written about this some time back, but the bag was sitting here, so here I am writing about it again. The Food for Kids Program was put together to ensure that children have food for the weekend when they aren't being fed at school during the week. Each Friday they are given a bag. If it's a long holiday week off, they are given 2 bags. This bag is typical of what they get each week. There are only minor changes like it might be ravioli instead of the macaroni, or animal crackers instead of the cheez its. Contents: 2 bowls of cereal 2 boxes of milk 1 juice box 1 oatmeal bar 1 stack of saltine crackers 1 packet of peanut butter sunflower seeds cheez its pretzels pudding cup peach pieces vienna sausages macaroni in sauce beans and franks As you can see, this would cover 2 breakfasts and at least 2 "meals" plus snacks. I can't imagine that their are children that really do go home from school and have no food, but sadly I'm sure there are lots of them out there. I see commercials on TV that talk about this program, no matter what they call it, so I can assume this type of program is US wide. Do you have this program where you live?

It is good to know that the children have food just in case.

No we do not have this program but I think it is a great idea. Sadly there are many children who go home and have nothing to eat. They do have breakfast programs at our schools that make sure every child has a good breakfast before classes begin.

In the summer here the schools still have free lunches for anyone under 18 and they have a few different places you can go to eat. If an adult wants to eat with their child it's only around $3 to do so.

I hear about a program like this on the news in our area more but I am not sure if our school system participates or not.

@marsha32 I found out some more info about our area. Specific places collect the food from donations and it is given to the schools and kids are sent home with it on the weekends. I want to say its called Back Packs for Kids or something like that.

We don't have that kind of a program here although there are soup kitchens that go to public schools. A hungry child cannot learn.

You are right, it's really hard to learn if you are hungry.

@Beatburn My daughter keeps snack bars and things on hand at all times for those times they over sleep and miss breakfast at school. They can at least eat one of those in the car on the way to school.

@marsha32 All over the world, there are children who go to school hungry. It saddens me.

No there is nothing like this, but families who have no money can contact an Association that will take care to bring them home food for their children.

@marsha32 Yes we have a National Association but every village has also a local association.

Sure, it is around Mac, not sure about this county, though. My former daughter in law signed her two up for it, and mostly the food went to waste. It is great if kids really need it though.

Liz never signed up, the school makes the decision on who might need it. We have stacks of the can in the cabinet, but lately they have been getting eaten. The snacks and juice go quick with the kids.

I really don't know but I certainly hope so. But I have to wonder what their parents eat or older siblings, do they take the little ones food?

The kids are pretty stingy here with "their" food, but they do share it some too. Of course the situation here isn't that that is all the food they would have for the weekend either. Unfortunately I can see that in families like that the parents would eat what was meant for the kids---I mean, if they don't care to have food in the house for the kids, they probably don't get for themselves either.
