Too Many Root Canals

My Tooth X-Rays

In the middle of December, I visited my dentist, and she took the pictures of my individual teeth you see in the photo. During our consultation afterward, she decided she needed to fill a couple of teeth at another appointment, but she referred me to an endodontist for another consultation about whether I needed root canal procedures. I had my endodontist appointment about ten days ago. I wasn't happy to learn that I need four root canal procedures. I'm not happy at all. My husband also needs some. What I really hate is there is no guarantee they will work. If they don't, the tooth will still have to be extracted after you spend all that money and you will need to spend even more to replace the tooth with an implant. Needless to say, I'm not looking forward to this. I'm still waiting for the dentist and endodontist to consult with each other and get back to me about scheduling. I just want to get it over with before the teeth get any worse. Have you had a root canal? What was your experience with it? Was it successful? Any advice for me?

I had a root canal many years ago, it worked very well, but it is sure that you only know AFTER.

That's the truth. I have three implants. Two had no problems. The third had to be done again because it failed. The oral surgeon did it for half price the second time.

@LadyDuck Strange, isn't it? An infected tooth can kill you faster than a broken arm.

@bagarad Our teeth are the most expensive things. We have medical coverage here in Switzerland, for almost everything, except the dentists.

Did you have to put it that way, John? Did it hurt more when you were in the chair of afterwards?

@bagarad There was the pain of the issue itself and pain of the procedure. The aftermath was more of a soreness. They give you a prescription to prevent infection.

@bagarad The fistula periapical periodontitis was really a bother to me.Happily I didn't have to have that tooth out.

I have had root canal treatment and I don't recall it being a problem at all although I don't like dentists. I did have trust in the one I had then. I think it took a long time but don't remember anything else negative about it. I know you don't like visiting the dentist so this would have been bad news.

I now have four appointments a week apart from each other beginning in a couple of weeks. I'm not looking forward to them.

I had one in my teenage years and lost the tooth in my mid to late 20's. I never had another one since.

@Dena91 All those procedures are terribly expensive. The estimate for just my root canals is $6000, not counting the crowns. My husband is also having one next week and has already had another. He also needs an implant.

What did you do instead? An implant?

I had a root canal and while it took a few years, the tooth finally failed. Certainly made me a lot keener on hanging on to what is left!

I have not had to face a root canal and I would feel apprehensive too. I spoke to a friend recently and she told me in passing that she had opted to have a tooth removed rather than face the treatment.

I had one years ago, and it's not an experience I want to repeat. My husband is supposed to have one Monday, and I think the thought of it is making him sick. He feels weak again today.
