A Great Address

Apsley House

A final thought on the Duke of Wellington, he had the best address - ever! About ten minutes walk from his club, in Waterloo Place, is the Duke's city residence Apsley House. Sitting on Piccadilly at the corner with Hyde Park. 'Course, we know he didn't walk being able to effortlessly mount his horse in front of the Athenaeum. The address for this stately pile was 'Number 1, London'. Simple and easy to remember!

I would just about die for that address. Number 1, London - it couldn't get much better could it?

What is the use of this house today ? Is it still a private residence, a museum ? I am quite shocked to see high buildings near it : the environment is not protected ?

It is a museum. The buildings in the background are on Park Lane, not really sure why they allowed them to be built.

Wellington was very much a hero, so it is no surprise he got such a nice address and such a nice house. Today the address is officially 149 Piccadilly

@FayeHazel The buildings behind are on Park Lane, a rather expensive street in the city. They have looked good when built, but I am not that keen. Apsley House is, I believe, the last surviving example of an aristocractic town house in London

@Ronrybs He deserved it , it sounds like. It is so interesting. I see the grand house, but next too it - what looks like a much more modern apartment complex. Interesting to see so different of era combined like that

He was from Irish aristocracy and he did win the last battle of the Napoleonic wars, so I guess it sort out his future for the good!
