Small Space to do Dishes

Recently since I'm staying with friends the space here in order to do dishes is really small. The dishes are usually piled up pretty good on this small space and it just looks like so much more work! It probably really isn't that much more but... I always do an inner groan when I go to do them. I feel nervous I will knock them down and they will all break.

I love doing the dishes. I love it when they are done and everywjhere is tidy again! Are there many because there are many people or because you don't do them very often?

@jhechorain Ah I get it. You must feel good when you get them all done I guess?

Kind of both. I am staying with a family right now and so yes there are quite a few of us. I sometmes just have to be out of their space like say after dinner so they can do their thing with their children. I do the dishes when I can but then times like that, they build up. I help out when I can.

It can be difficult working in cramped spaces. That's when accidents happen.

I am just extra careful with what I handle and make sure I don't pull over any large piles. I've seen a few glasses get broken here already, none by me so far.

@jhechorain It's always much better if someone else does the breaking. :)

I do mine right away always except for when they cut the water off. I have a small space too I could use two small bowls one to clean off the rest of the mucky stuff and the other to wash up in and then rinse out the first bowl and stack the plates in that one. Forks and knives and other stuff would go in the side of the bowl by the plates.

@jhechorain Always good to keep the amount of plates and stuff down all you can. I find that if I leave it all I get to look at it and think yuk I don´t feel like doing that. But if I attack them right away and clean them all up and stacked away nicely its all over in a few minutes. Hey presto all done.

Yeah, like I said to someone else who commented, I would do them more often but it isn't my house so after dinner i go to bed to be out of their way but I do try to help out. It is easier to keep up if you do them more often in a small space.

I guess if space were limited, I'd tend to do the dishes more often - that way it doesn't pile up. But it's hard when you're staying at someone else's place and they have their routines. I forgot who, but I remember one of my friends having to wash dishes and having a drying rack in the tub to make up for the space !

Yes it is difficult with someone else's habits and their space. I have seen similar situations when I have been in small places too, whatever you can do to make things work I suppose!

@jhechorain This was a comment I made on another post recently, but I have a friend who never used her kitchen as she didn't cook . . . so since she didn't use the oven at all, she stored pots and pans and even some dishes in there .

It is always a little more challenging to do chores in a tight space. I am sure they appreciate your help.

What about disposable plates while you are there? Can be a bit costly for some, but might help.

@jhechorain These really are an unnecessary expense.

I have the same problem. I hate doing dishes but if I leave it up to my DIL she's too busy to do them. So I do them after lunch then again after dinner. I can't stand dishes sitting in the sink, it makes the kitchen look filthy. I would love to have a dishwasher or at least one of those countertop or portable washers but they cost too much.

I would do them more often but after dinner I get out of their space and go to bed because they have children that need to go to school.

I have help around and enough space. The sink is where soiled dishes are kept and the scrubbed ones are kept on the platform. One by one the dishes are washed under the tap while the tap is kept on. While the washed item is kept in the draining basket the next scrubbed item is washed. This way no water is wasted and every single dish gets individual attention.

I feel your pain our kitchen has two small sinks and there are only 4 of us but after a meal you would think it was an army that was fed. My wife cleans as she goes to avoid the dish pile up usually by the time she serves dinner there is nothing left to clean except for the plates and utensils we are using to eat the food. We have a few incomplete set of dishes due to a few being broken. Lucky for us we have about 7 sets. The only thing that really sucks is when you are missing one and there is an odd looking piece used to replace the broken ones. Replacing sets can be hard when they have prints we found it easier to buy sets that are one color to make it easier to replace if you have a broken piece.

Just make do with what you have. Things will be better eventually. Dishes never made my heart sing, either.

Washing dishes is a big part of my job...and I hate that side of it. Tomorrow we've got a fairly big function, 100+ people having a 4 course meal and I get to do the dishes In the 5/6 months I've been in the job I've hardly broken anything but the other guy that does my job on opposite shifts has broken a whole bunch of things...literally hundreds and hundreds of pounds worth of breakages maybe even into the thousands of pounds Luckily we've a new £16.5k dishwasher that makes things a bit easier

That is a lot of dishes and a lot of breakages! I don't feel so bad with my small amount of dishes that I have to do compared to that. I haven't broke anything yet but there have been a couple glasses broken by other people here.

It is one of my least not favorite chores. I don't know if that made sense. Let's say.. I don't especially like doing chores but dishes are usually the easiest to deal with.
