This video caused a huge debate on Youtube

The guy on the video shows his 22 year old Chihuahua. This dog is originally owned by his wife when she was still single and when they got married he also became his dog. If my memoery serves me right, they are married for 18 years. The average lifespan of dogs I believe is 12 years and this dog already surpassed the expiration date. The dog is now blind, deaf and toothless because of his age. This video caused a debate on the comment section of Youtube. Some people thinks he should euthanize his dog because they think he is suffering. He just stand up and doesn't really play around and when younger dogs try to play with him he don't respond. Some people believes this dog should just enjoy the rest of his life until he got his natural death. They think the dog is not suffering and his owner gives him all the love and attention. The people who wanted the dog euthanized it is cruelty to keep him alive. The people who wanted the dog alive thinks It is cruelty to kill him. How old is your longest living pet?
Maverick was rescued at age 3 (or 4) and is now 22! The secret? True love. #AnimalNation | Fridays at 10/9c http://www.animalplanet.com/tv-shows/animal-natio...

me... the dog must be keep alive... it does not mean being very old to be killed through mercy killing... maybe the dog destined to live longer just like people living hundred years old and above

Many vets tries to convince owners of decade dog pets because they just want to make money from the euthanasia.

No person should decide when that dog must stop living

In the US many people euthanizes pets even if they were healthy so they wont suffer before reaching the old age.

That's a really old dog! Well of course he doesn't play around with the younger dogs - a lot of older dogs don't want to do that - same as people! If he is only blind, deaf and toothless, then he is probably not suffering. Suffering would be in pain from an illness or severe injury. But I don't know how it is for this dog . . . if he is ok, then he should of course be allowed to live his full life! I don't think my dogs made it past 12.

@CaptAlbertWhisker I think it's the small dogs that can live a fairly long life. The big ones are what - about 15 tops? Wow, I can't imagine feeding a dog just vegetables and eggs!

I found out there is a dog who is 30 years old. I didnt know a dog can last that long. The dog is ovo-vegetarian, he only eats vegetable and eggs.

I would like what they would say if they were old, deaf and with no teeth and the family would decide to euthanize them because "may be" they suffer. I think that humans should not decide who must continue to live or should die, no matter if they are other humans or animals.

Most of the people who wants to euthanize him Are from the US.. Euthanizing pets when they reach a certain age seemed to be a trend there.

@CaptAlbertWhisker I would not like to be the grandparents of those who share those ideas.

Speaking as someone who lost his dog prior to New Year's Eve, I say they should care for the dog. Or better yet, give him to someone who will care for the dog during its final years?

I think he is the one who will take care of the dog until his final years. It is originally his wife's dog but he tookover.

I have had 6 dogs and none of them have lived beyond 13. I have had two go semi-blind and one go almost deaf. These dogs still seemed to get enjoyment out of life because they could smell their human and canine companions and feel that they were loved. Even with their issues they loved playing, eating, walking, lounging in the sun etc. I personally would not euthanize this dog although it looks very frail. If it is still cared for and it isn't stressed out by it's issues then I'd let him live his natural life span.

if humans can live happy lives even after they go blind and deaf I am sure dogs can do it too. I dont know why many self proclaimed dog lovers thinks dogs should be euthanized if they go blind.
