Clearing the Haze

I love to cook and bake. However, I'm trying to find alternate ways to do that in this small apartment. The smoke alarm is directly across from the stove. I made turkey bacon. I turned on the stove fan as this is supposed to prevent the alarm going off. However, that annoying beep and Fire, Fire, Fire was soon heard. I grabbed my broom and shut it off into hush mode, only to have it go back on a few seconds later. I did that for at least five minutes before the smoke from my breakfast was at a level that it no longer caused the alarm to set off. As I looked around the kitchen there was a haze everywhere. I had to open my bedroom window to get rid of it. I decided to make scrambled eggs in the microwave. Not usually the way I make eggs, but considering the alternative, it was the better choice. The haze has cleared now, and I have closed the bedroom window. It was an alarming way to start off my day. Do you have problems with your smoke alarm going off when least expected? Thanks for reading.

I've started doing a lot of crock pot cooking. When I use the oven it doesn't happen as much, but it has. It always scares the heck out of me when it goes off. Now I have a broom close by so I can get it hushed fast.

I would hate that. Our alarm is upstairs in the rooms. They were old and kept going off for a while. Now maintenance has changed them and they are nice and quiet. I used to live in an apartment when my daughter was young that had no alarms in it at all. I was just thinking about that.

That would be a carbon monoxide detector. You can find them at the hardware stores, Wal-Mart, just about anywhere that has a home improvement section in it.

I had a similar problem once... and like you I just kept turning it off when cooking ... would it be possible for you to relocate the smoke detector, is it fixed into the ceiling or just stuck on...

I can't relocate it. I don't know if it's fixed or not, but talking to the office, it's against the policy of the apartment complex to do anything more than to put it in hush mode.

Is it possible for you to move the stove a bit further away?

No. I can't move the stove or the smoke detector. The stove is at the end on the far wall.

No such thing here. May be my eyes would be an indication as they will water if there is too much smoke. Nothing so far (lol)

The only time I burn something is when I cook carrots. I don't cook them now as I cannot be trusted.

We have no problems at home, due to the professional exhaust we have, but had problems here in Florida, even when we opened our bedroom window to let the sea breeze in! They fixed that problem in both buildings last year by having the fire department install new and improved smoke detectors in each unit.

Yes! Several times cooking steaks. I turn it off now, it disturbs my neghbors, I just have to remember to turn it back on again after cooking.

The smoke alarm was forever going off in our camper van. It was really annoying as we didn't have too many options.
