Scala Contarini del Bovolo (Snail staircase) Palazzo Contarini.

While researching for my trip to Venice I came across this remarkable palace. The Palace belonged to the family Contarini. Work on the palace started in the 1400's. It was kept in the family for many years and one of the inhabitants became Doge of Venice. The family were very well off and were merchants. Many merchants built grand palaces to live in. The story goes that the Merchant had given instructions to the builders to renovate the palace while he was away. Apparently he returned unexpectedly an demanded that a staircase be built. However the architect was unable to put in a staircase without causing much work and renovation to the palace. He came up with the idea of putting the staircase on the outside of the building which meant that the inside remained intact. The merchant eventually returned from his overseas trip to find the palace renovations were complete. Fortunately he fell in love with the external staircase and remarked it looked like a snails shell. Hence it becoming known as the Scala Contarini Del Bovolo. The Snail staircase. To find this palace is quite difficult. It is poorly advertised and directions are not that clear. It is just off the piazza Manin down a little alleyway. Along the alleyway there is an even smaller alleyway which leads to the back of the palace where you can see the staircase. It is a magnificent and unusual design. Unfortunately when I visited the palace was being repaired and was closed to the public but we were able to slip into the back alleyway to look at this building.

That is so pretty and what a story behind it. I didn't see this on my vacation in Venice, but was so afraid of getting lost in all those twisting alleys. My husband somehow knew were to go and how to get out. It's funny, because he gets lost here! Lol!

The front of the palace faces the grand Canal. It is quite a challenge to find it though!

@garymarsh6 I have been on the Grand Canal many times, but no one pointed it out to me. If they did, I have forgotten. Next trip!

@DianneN Thats the trouble you can not see it from the front only by going along the little alleyways at the back.

It looks very tall. I wonder how long it would take to climb the Snail staircase?.

A bit fast than a snail. LOL. Actually it is only about six stories high. High enough if you have arthritic knees though!

@garymarsh6 You are right , six stories -not too high - unless you have troublesome knees.

Do you know that there was a crowdfunding project to collect money to reopen the Scala Contarini? The spiral staircase is closed to the public for about 10 years, Mr. Brussato (the man who want to reopen the staircase) hoped to collect $55,000 to complete the project... he only got $75.00. What a shame! I climbed the stairs when I visited in 1981.

@amadeo Oh my word don't get me started on the Vatican. I spent from 07:00 to 23:00 in St. Peters and the Vatican. Only realised I had nothing to drink all day and came out found the nearest cafe and drank five cans of cocacola straight down which is the most I have ever spent on that drink. ($35 can you imagine) I was in heaven that day!

I did not find this one - probably because my hubby was in too much of a hurry to take photos of the water everywhere!

Haha I am not surprised it is like a massive grown up playground. You just can't get enough of it and want to take it all in and absorb the atmosphere and beauty like a sponge!

That's gorgeous! To bad it was being renovated and you couldn't get inside to take a look around. Some of the best finds are hard to find.

How beautiful! I sometimes think it would be nice to live in an exotic palace - but only if I had cleaners.
