Localized Nerve Pain.

Do you know the feeling you get in your hands after slapping concrete? Not that I hope anyone does so intentionally. It's just, when you have tripped and are falling, you must catch yourself and usually that means with ones hands.
That is the feeling I have had in my hand off and on for the past couple of days. It's only in the pad (lower area) around my right thumb.
Apparently it's a hereditary trait, as my grandmother has had the same problems. She states that it can only be fixed with surgery but that the sensation returns.
So why even bother with the surgery? Right now it isn't an irritant, but it definitely is noticeable.
I hope it won't get worse and require medical attention. It doesn't cause any difficulty with range of motion, which is good.
I do wonder if this has a name?

Do you wear those wrist things or compression gloves to bed then?
I hope I don't ever develop carpal tunnel, but it's a possibility with using my hands for work so much.

@Happy2BeMe I'm sorry to hear that. Surely there's something you could do to keep the pain away?

@ScribbledAdNauseum no i don't. I tried but I couldn't sleep with them on. Some nights are worse then others depending on how much I use my hands that day.

I have horrible balance issue and I am always tripping and failing. I think I hurt myself more when I try and stop the fall.

My mother had multiple sclerosis, she would often fall and was thusly taught to do so somewhat safely.
Has the doctors not offered suggestions on how to cause the least damage to yourself?

@AutumnSnow I am glad you have safe ways to get around then.
Speaking of a walker, I am not sure where I saw it but I saw a new concept for a walker. Instead of those things that are too low and cause you to be at a constant bending position, there is supposedly one that allows you to stand straight up and still gives you the support you need.

@ScribbledAdNauseum not really. I use a walker now most of the time and a wheelchair part time especially if there is going to be a lot of walking to avoid risk falling

It's not a very sharp pain yet. It's like a constant heated sting though.

@ScribbledAdNauseum I was picturing more of a numbness which would be more tolerable.

@shaggin It's not numb, but I think the numbness would drive me even more crazy. With numbness comes the tingly feeling like it's "Fallen asleep."

I've had some soreness in my right wrist lately. I'm wondering if it's the beginnings of carpel tunnel. So far it's not horrible.. but a pain will hit it once in awhile and make me flinch.

@ScribbledAdNauseum I like the topical pain relief called "Outback Pain Relief" as well as compression gloves or wrist bands with copper in them. My doctor says mine is arthritis although I was blaming fibro for it. At one point another doctor was convinced I had carpal tunnel. I started using a paraffin bath regularly and the carpal tunnel symptoms went away. good thing, as I did not want surgery.

@GardenGerty We have two different types of an icyhot type pain relief here. One that is name brand and another that is supposedly more natural.
I'm glad it wasn't carpal tunnel for yours though. I have a friend who had to have carpal tunnel surgery and she now has an ugly scar. I think she has full range of motion and all of that back though.
I'm not sure what exactly this is. It's not in my wrist, but along a nerve in the padding of my hand near my thumb. It hasn't caused any numbness yet though, atleast not what I would call numbness.

I have a pair of compression gloves that I use when my wrists start hurting. They do so from time to time. Wearing those gloves for a little bit helps the pain stop.
I hope it isn't carpal tunnel for you though.

Be sure to talk to more physicians before making a decision. There might be an easier way to address this.

I won't be going to a physician quite yet. I want to wait until it gets unbearable before I do anything at all.
I work with my hands, and am already getting very few hours. I couldn't afford to be out of work because I can't use my hand for a period of time. The hand that has the pain is my dominant one.

Nerve pains can be very difficult to treat. Hope you are not too bothered by it.

I work with my hands, so I do hope I don't inadvertently make it worse.

@ScribbledAdNauseum Keep it warm if you can wear gloves in the cold weather that helps reduce some discomfort.

@garymarsh6 Thank you, I will take that into consideration. It's not been very cold here, but I'll be sure to keep my hands warm when i do go out.

@ScribbledAdNauseum .....Sure it can. Here is something to read about it.
What is carpal tunnel syndrome? Carpal tunnel syndrome is a specific group of symptoms that can include tingling, numbness, weakness, or pain in the fingers, thumb, hand, and occasionally in the arm.

Can carpal tunnel go all the way to your hand? It's gone now, (the sensation) but it has come and gone before.

Oh dear. That's got to hurt big time. I hope you feel better and take something for the pain. You should see a neurologist as soon as it gets worse for an examination. Maybe you sprained it.

I don't think it's a sprain? It's in a weird place for a sprain and I described the pain to my grandmother and she said that is exactly how her hurt hand started out.
It isn't at the point of needing anything for the pain yet, luckily.

Perhaps, homeopathy has the answer. If you wish, you can give it a try.

I don't know. I'll do my own research to get ideas on what it might be and ways to deal with it, but it's still something that will eventually need to be addressed my a professional.
