True Story About Stuart McLean And Me

Canada
February 17, 2017 6:22am CST
I grew up in Upstate NY, went to College in Kansas, met my husband there and about five years later we married and moved back to Kansas. I did a lot of traveling, driving back to NY to visit my parents every summer. Then we moved to Canada my trip to Upstate New York got a lot shorter. The New York State Thruway and I became good friends. I never traveled alone. I always had entertainment, first a book on tape and then books on CD's to keep me and anyone else in my car alert on those 4 hour trips “home”. In Canada I met Stuart McLean. Not face to face but I listened to him on the radio and found all of his stories on CD's in the library. His radio show was called “ The Vinyl Cafe”. He talked and told stories (very funny stories and sometime sad) with humor of his family that were wonderful. He made me laugh and cry and sometimes both at the same time. On one trip I remember driving up a steep hill on the thruway and laughing my face off with tears running down my face when I noticed a state Trooper was driving next to me and looking at me.... And looking at me...And looking at me.... I quickly thought it must be because of the tears of laughter falling down my face while laughing out loud... So I picked up the “Book” and held it at the window. The Trooper laughed gave me a thumbs up and went on his way... Sadly it was announced to Canada that Stuart McLean died two days ago after two-year-long battle with melanoma. He will be missed... Look for his audio books, you won't be sorry...
Stuart McLean, the host of CBC Radio's The Vinyl Café and an award-winning humorist, has died at age 68 after a battle with melanoma.

I always travel with books on CD's now, I find driving by myself especially is very boring. I will look for some new CDs of Stewart's that I haven't heard..for this summer's trip.

That was a sad thing to hear, even though I don't know him. He was so young in this day and age. Great discussion!

Great story, Marilyn. I take it he lived in Canada? Maybe I'll check him out when I'm home for the next few months if I remember that is. I'm hoping to get loads of work done around here once I'm up and around more easily.
