What Time Would You Get Up?

I know there are a lot of early birds here in the myLot world but not me. I'm more of a night owl but I can't stay up until the wee hours anymore so my night owling ends around midnight. My daughters were both having a conversation yesterday about having to set their alarms and how they enjoyed being able to go to bed for a long weekend without the headache of having to get up in the morning (one has to go to work, the other gets the kids off to school). I chimed in with I'm the only person who doesn't have to set an alarm (I'm retired) and I do. I really am used to setting it from when I was taking care of my mom and we had our routine in the mornings. I wasn't in a position to just sleep in and then start the day. Now that my mom is passed I still set the alarm for 8:30am. Both my daughters think this is crazy since I don't have anyone to get up for anymore and I can enjoy sleeping later in the mornings. I don't know if it's just habit that's hard to break or if I'm afraid I'll sleep til noon and the day will pass me by. Today was one of those days when I probably could have sleep much later if the alarm didn't go off and I staggered out of bed. So, here's my question...if you never had to set an alarm what time would you get up each morning?

I have been waking at 5:30 AM for so many years, no alarm...I still awaken around that time. In the winter when it's dark I might sleep a little later. In the summer I might get up earlier. I'm not a night owl....my coach turns into a pumpkin well before midnight.

I don't set my alarm on the weekend when I am off and I am usually up between 7-8. I get up at 6 during the week.

I feel bad for anyone who has to get up early and go to work. I remember those days like they were yesterday. I bet you enjoy sleeping in a little later on the weekends.

@Marilynda1225 Yes I sure do. I don't always get enough sleep through the week so it is nice when the weekends get here to catch up on my sleep.

Usually my "internal clock" goes off around 6am, but if I could sleep in and wasn't woken on my own I think that I would probably set an alarm for around 7 so that I would have the whole day. Today it was much later when I woke.......but I didn't sleep well last night.

Sorry you didn't sleep well last night. I'm not usually ready for coffee until 9am but at least I shower, get dressed and make the bed before heading to the kitchen to start the coffee perking.

I am retired also and wake up when my body wants to wake up which is early. No alarm clock here unless I have an early appointment.

I hate early morning appointments and I try to make mine for the later part of the mornings. It used to keep me awake at night when my mom would have an early morning appointment and I wouldn't sleep well even if my alarm was set.

If you're asking what time I'd get up if I never had to get up early for anything, I'd probably sleep too long like to eleven, but I'm a night owl too and I'd probably stay up till two am. Nowadays I have times when I could sleep until nine am which was my plan for today but something usually gets me up earlier than I'd want. Today it was my husband asking me a question, while I'm still sleeping, to something he could have gotten up to check out himself. Other days it's my needing to use the bathroom that awakens me too early or at least earlier than my alarm. But I will usually set something if I have the day off. I just decide the latest I'd want to sleep if I am able to do so. I've set it for eleven am before, but rarely sleep that long right now. Rather than setting it for the time you do, try a later time to set it for. You'll probably wake up on your own around the time you're used to getting up and may find you don't need an alarm. But, set it for something you'd be happy with, even an hour later or so would give you a little more time to sleep if you need it.

You have a good suggestion about setting it later. I'm going to have to give it a try. Like you, the bathroom calls long before the alarm goes off

@Marilynda1225 What I hate is when the bathroom alarm goes off within the hour of when I was going to get up anyway. I still try to get a little more sleep but more recently that's been more difficult. After next week I won't have any obligations for a while other than a bit of pt which will be early morning for me at 9:15, 3 days per week for the next month. So, that means I can sleep in on Tues, Thurs, and Sat as Sunday is church.

I like to wake up at 5 am. Early Morning gives more energy and more speed on routine activities.

@shshiju That is not very early sleeping- so don't you feel a bit lethargic when you wake up early?

Since I retired my alarm is demoted to the days that I have special plans, such as catching a plane. I simply get up when I awake, which could be 8 AM or 10 AM.

Between 8 & 10 would probably be the time I'd wake up naturally if I didn't set my alarm

I think if I did not have to get up I would just sleep until whenever I woke up which likely would be very late. I used to do this and would waste a lot of my day by sleeping but it sure felt nice. I get up at 7am to get my daughter ready to go to school and then I do the dishes while I wait for my son's cyber school to start at 8:15.

I get up usually around 7ish now since Josiah wakes me at that time. Lol. Without him waking me I used to get up at 8am every morning on my own. I cannot sleep past that usually unless I stayed up way too late. I'm not a person that could sleep the day away even if I wanted to.

@Marilynda1225 I would agree, it's time to see what your body clock says. I'm willing to bet it will adjust a bit but you will get all the sleep you need.

Well, it has been a long time since I have been away from using an alarm clock, apart from some weekend days. First I had to get up by 6:00 when I was unmarried and working, and later married and without kids. Yet now I have kids and we have to get them ready, so alarm is a must. Yet if left to me, I will wake up at around 8:30 to 9:00 A.M in winters and between 6:00 and 7:00 in summers. And if very tired, I will like to sleep till 10 o' clock in the morning.

Life has a way of getting us up early especially kids when they are babies and then have to get off to school. Being retired is wonderful in that respect

Unless I have somewhere to go I rarely get up before 10.30am, often later. But I don't go to bed until about 4am - I'm a real nightowl.

@jaboUK that is very late! I think you ought to sleep earlier- at least by 12 in the night, unles you have a night shift! So late sleeping is not good for health.

@jabouk wow you certainly are a night owl if you don't go to bed until 4am. I'm lucky if I make it til 1am and that's a really really late night for me

Being retired, I go to sleep at the same time most nights and wake up when my body tells me to or when Orville or Doodles awaken me. Usually it's between 6:30 and 7:00, just in time for my morning walk.

Some days I think I'd sleep too late and miss a good part of the day. I don't know if I'll stop setting my alarm but many mornings I wish I could allow myself to turn it off and go back to sleep. I just don't want to wake up at lunchtime

I naturally get up between 8:30 am and 10:00 depending on how well I sleep the night before- You really should listen to your daughters as you may be losing important extra sleep. Besides, it will get your own inner alarm going and that's better in the long run.
