My U.S. Representative Could Lose Her Next Election

I live in one of four districts in Orange County, California which have a Republican U.S. Representative, but Hillary Clinton won the most votes during the last election. This means that the Democrats have grown in strength over the past few years, despite the fact that Orange County is traditionally a Republican stronghold.
There are pockets of other U.S. representatives across the country who are also considered vulnerable, but a lot of attention has been focused in the districts in Orange County, California.
My representative, Mimi Walters, has refused to hold a town hall meeting. She also has refused to go into her local office, because protestors are there nearly every day. She is not answering calls. However, by using the website Countable to comment on various bills, I have managed to get her to respond to five different comments I have sent over the past few weeks.
There is a group which has dedicated itself to seeing that Mimi will not win the next election. I hope they are successful. Their goal is to flip the House of Representatives from Republican control to Democratic control during the 2018 Midterm elections.
I don't know if they can succeed. I do know that I voted for Mimi in the past and I do not plan to vote for her in the future. I have been very unhappy with some of her anti-environment and anti-women's rights votes.
The last election is barely over, and we are already gearing up for the mid-term 2018 election.
Are their activist groups gearing up in your state (if you are in the U.S.) or are there controversial political issues going on in your country (if you live outside the U.S.)?

Despite the political party I'm registered under, I will vote for the best candidate, regardless of political party. I am not one of those who votes solely on party lines. I look at each candidate and what they have to offer, as well as their past track record. Integrity is also important to me, so I do research on each candidate's character as well. There are candidates that I have voted into office that I regret voting for, and their are candidates I didn't vote for who ended up doing fantastic jobs in office.

@DeborahDiane Wow, so it sounds like she didn't live up to all the hype! There's nothing worse than a politician who either 1) does nothing once elected; or 2) does the exact opposite of the platform they campaigned on. Do they think that voters don't pay attention?

@moffittjc - Yes, I actually do think that most politicians were able to get away with a lot in the past because they truly believed the voters were not paying close attention. However, today with sites like Facebook, Twitter, and Countable, it is much easier to stay up-to-date with every single vote. Politicians better take note!

@moffittjc - I have not been a member of a political party for decades. In the last election, my husband and I sat down, went through the ballots and voted. When we were finished, we had voted half for Republicans and half for Democrats ... and we had not planned it that way. However, I am very unhappy about what the Republicans have been doing, so next election I will have to look long and hard before I vote for another one. As far as I'm concerned, I'm done with our U.S. Representative and so are several of my friends who also voted for her. To give you perspective, when our U.S. Rep first ran, my husband was sitting next to her in the picture she used on every piece of her campaign literature, so this is a major swing for us.

@jstory07 - I completely agree. I have voted for both Republicans and Democrats over the years. However, there are issues, such as the environment, which are important to me. I will not vote for someone who votes to allow our air and water to be polluted. My U.S. representative did that five times in the past two weeks!

I'm really hoping the Democrats can take back the House and the Senate in 2018, I think that's our only hope of saving the country and maybe the planet. Even then, the damage may already be too bad by then.
I've been annoyed at the media and some political figures for constantly saying since the election that the Dems had suffered such a horrible defeat, that they'd lost the White House, and House and the Senate in this past election. Well, unfortunately Trump got the Electoral votes despite a huge popular vote loss so he's in the White House when he's not in Florida but the GOP already had majorities in Congress and the Democrats actually made some GAINS, not losses in both chambers. Granted it wasn't enough, it didn't meet the hopes and expectations many of us had, but it's at least a bit of a start for 2018 when the party out of the White House traditionally does better and often retakes power. I'm doing a lot of posting about the main reason to flip the House - which will only take a gain of 24 seats with 23 districts with GOP representatives that went for Hillary so it's within reach - and that's IMPEACHMENT. I think the grounds are there and then some, we just need members with the ba11s to do it!

@anniepa - I agree with you! My Representative is one of the 20 most vulnerable Representatives in the U.S., and I intend to do everything I can to make sure she is not reelected. I think it is very unlikely that she will be. I agree that the Democrats have a very good chance of turning things around. The Republicans are currently looking very incompetent, prejudiced, uncaring and Un-Christian. More and more of my Republican friends are upset by how things have been going.

@DWDavis - I think it is going to take more than the DNC. I think it is going to require a ground-swelling of people in both parties who are upset by what happens in the next two years to the environment, healthcare, Medicare, Social Security, PBS, and other programs which are on the chopping block.

@LadyDuck - I totally agree. I always have voted for the person who I think will do the best job. We actually know our U.S. Representative and supported her in the past two elections. However, since Trump got elected, she has changed. She has become less moderate and begun to vote FOR bills which could damage the environment ... such as allowing coal mining waste to be dumped in creeks. It is almost like I do not know her anymore. I have made it clear that I have no intention of ever voting for her again. I'm very disappointed in the decisions she is making.

@DeborahDiane We had the same problem when we lived in Italy. We used to vote for someone who was part of our political party, until he started to take very wrong decisions.

@LadyDuck - I guess this can be a problem in any democracy ... we vote for people we think will be good until they begin to put their political party above the voters.

Our ruling State party (Liberals) governs only with the help of the National Party (mostly farmers and country people). Now the Liberals will be giving their preferences to a minor party which is coming up through the ranks. This is a real slap in the face to the Nationals and I think will spell the end of the Liberals here in WA. They have made some very controversial decisions lately.

@JudyEv - That is interesting. I think that politicians often forget who they represent ... their constituents back home, not their political party. If they work against the well-being of their constituents, they will pay a price for it.

@DeborahDiane The Libs have made some very unpopular decisions lately. I think they'll be ousted when we have our elections in a few weeks.

@JudyEv - It sounds like both of our countries need a party called The Moderates, which will support bills which are not extreme in either direction. I do not want draconian cuts to our federal government; nor do I want everything to be free. I think there are balanced ideas out there, but both parties seem to be pulling in extreme directions.
