Carnivale

It's Carnivale day here in chilly Manitou Springs (36° at the moment,) or, as it's called, "Mardi Gras, Manitou style." The festival itself is fairly simple. Starting at 10:30, one of our three downtown parks hosts the annual Mumbo Jumbo Gumbo Cookoff. This, of course, is a Gumbo contest, with trophies awarded to the top three Gumbo's, with awards for both Best Showmanship and People's Choice. After the Gumbo contest, people begin lining Manitou Avenue for the 1:00 start of the Carnivale Parade, your basic small town version of Mardi Gras. You might get some candy and, more importantly, beads (I got four strands this year, and one piece of saltwater taffy. I almost got a pack of Sour Patch Kids, but I would have had to shove this brat out of the way to get to them first, and people were watching.) The parade begins right in front of our apartment, so we always get some beads. We had about 30 strands each built up, but a cat got to them. Needless to say, we had to start collecting them over today. Naturally, every bar in Manitou has been open all morning, and every one of them will be packed into the evening, especially the ones that offer live music. When we have money, we go, however, this year we stayed home. All in all, it's always a good time, and even though the parade was kind of short this year, more than likely due to the cold, we had fun. (Photo by me)

36° Fahrenheit or Celsius? What does Gumbo mean, please? I'm not from your country and English is not my native language.

It's a soup or stew that comes from the Southern/New Orleans Creole tradition, I think. It often has shrimp and other fish in it. To me, Creole refers to a tradition that involves a mixture of Black American (especially Haitian) and French American cultures.

By the way, 36 degrees in Colorado in Winter would be F, not C.

The people in the parade throw it to you. It usually ends up in the street.

@TiarasOceanView - Oh yeah, quite a few drunks came back by later in the evening. They are always entertaining, since I've been one.

Fun is what really matters. Too bad the brats were getting all the candy. At our local summer parade last year, they threw a few things directly at the adults. Nice caramels and golf balls! The kids were getting a huge amount of candy; just what they need.

@teamfreak16 We only play a couple of times per year. I say we are social golfers. Play when visiting family. So, it was nice to not have to spend money on golf balls.

@paigea - I mostly played Par 3's. I hit just enough good shots to keep me coming back.

Golf balls would rock. And I don't even play golf anymore.

Gumbo, hummmm, I can't recall the last time I had gumbo but it's been decades. Looks like I better see how it's made and try to make if for myself.

There is a bar in Downtown Colorado Springs that serves an excellent gumbo. The owner is from Louisiana.

It sounds like one of the silly festivals/parades we have here just because we can.

You should see the Coffin Races we do each year. It's insane. Thousands of people packed along a section of avenue that isn't even a half mile long.

We have something similar in out town in the summer, minus the Gumbo, and in Spain they seem to have carnivals every other week. We're going there again next week.

Sounds like a good time. Are the beads strung into necklaces or bracelets? And do you just like to collect them? (Can't help being nosy)

Shoot, you should have "accidently" knocked that kid aside! I remember being pummeled by kids after a foul ball which should have been mine.

His mom saw me look over at him before I made a move for the candy. I shouldn't have done that!
