Railway journey has its own charm. If you are travelling a long journey by train, you could enjoy the various scenarios on your way from green fields, forests, hills, rivers and bridges and what not. In the era of air travel and expansion of aviation sector, many people prefer to travel by air instead of rail, as it saves their time. India has vast network of rail lines and trains run across the length and breadth of the country. How is the railway network at your place and if you have a choice, do you like to go by a train or you prefer air journey? Image courtesy - Google

In the good old days we travelled a lot by train whenever we went to our native place. There were package tours to Darjeeling and Kashmir part of the journey was by trin. My last train journey was by Amtrak from San Jose to Oxnard in the US. It was a beautiful journey along coastline. when the sea kept us company right through.

It means that my post regarding train journey made you nostalgic. Yes, package tours are still there by IRCTC and they arrange it of almost every important place. I have observed their package tours are little bit expensive and for longer duration. I have no occasion to travel in a train abroad. I can understand that a train moving along sea coast would have been a very memorable and life time experience for you.

I prefer Trains myself. At the moment the Network of Trains is pretty good. They do however have their down times as well. Like Hours of waiting when they don“t organize things well. But apart from that we have the Ave which is the fast Train and you can reach say Barcelona in about three hours.

It means you have pretty efficient rail network in Spain and there are super fast trains also which take less time to reach a place. How are you doing?

@dpk262006 Doing quite well thank you. They have improved the Railways a lot yes but sometimes they bung it all up and people are waiting hours just to get on a Train. Apart from that its quite brilliant sometimes.

I go everywhere by car.. I have flown once or twice - I was only on a train once as a child . but I would love to explore again a journey by train. It is probably more lovely in your area than mine.

@minx267 Does that mean that you live in a small city and there is restricted rail network at your place? I also hope that you could visit NYC or Boston to enjoy a longer train journey.

I like to travel by train, the Swiss rail system is very good, but expensive, it costs more than using your car.

I understand that you have a wonderful railway system over there and trains go high up to the mountains. Why it is so that rail journey are expensive?

@LadyDuck It means that maintenance cost is very high and they compensate for maintenance cost through steep fares for train journey. Hopefully, the railway is maintained by the Government?

@dpk262006 May be because maintaining the rails on this country is very expensive. As you say, our trains go up in the mountain, in winter they have to clear the snow to allow the trains to circulates. They have built special tunnels for the trains to pass through the mountains, this is not something cheap.

I like to go by car . With a car, we are at no one's mercy - we can go at will on our own schedule - in privacy . But of course it's not possible to take the car everywhere around the world! Hubby and I have limited experiences on a plane . . . we have not taken the kids for air travel yet. We do have trains here, but also we have not taken advantage of them - not even for a local trip (but have been meaning to).

You are a car lover and you don't want to be at the mercy of anyone and you want complete privacy. Of course when you are travelling by your own private vehicle, you have all the liberties to travel and stop, whenever you feel like. It is bit surprising that you have not exactly travelled in trains, which run in your city. Go for a train trip, whenever possible, I am sure that you would enjoy it.

@much2say As we have very vast rail network and many trains run parallel, we also get our share of accidents. Accidents occur due to sabotage, fault of drivers or due to technical issues and many people get injured and die in the accidents. We just cannot avoid accidents, it could happen anywhere.

@dpk262006 Yes, we can stop and go as we please - we pretty much have full control (except for bad traffic!). I was thinking about why we don't trains when it is available here. I think one of the things on the back of my mind is train accidents. Maybe trains are safe, but a few years ago there was a bad train wreck near our area. I believe 2 trains went head on and it was quite horrific. The thing is the train engineer of one was texting and did not see the signals that another train was coming from the other direction . . . this and all the deaths could have been avoided . It's scary as I know the exact spot where it happened. But I have to get over that fear. I suppose accidents could happen with any vehicle . . . plane, boat, or even cars.

We used to have the railway train trip to Manila. It has different coaches. I remember us, travelling by family and we were in the sleeping coach which has double decker beds. Then , when we eat there is a folding table attached to the wall so we can just unfold it and have it infront of us to eat. But those were gone now. Airconditioned buses replaced them plus of course the airplanes.

It means that it was in the past, when you used to travel by train to go to Manila. Yes, sleeper coach has normally three or two berths on side for passengers to sleep. Tables are attached for eating purposes. It seems that now a day either you travel by car or by buses and train journey is not a preferred mode of transport.

@dpk262006 Yes the train was outmoded because they can take 15 hours to travel to Manila by it. While a bus can travel only for 10 hours. Though, in Manila we have 3 types and line of lightway transit which runs so fast. It helps a lot for the commuters who wants to avoid the super traffic of Manila.
