I Am Being Delegated to the Recliner.

During the day my pain is normally zero except when I'm doing certain exercises, then it may be 2-3. During the night is a different story. I don't know whether I've done too much, or whether all my muscle groups are getting worked at the same time. For the past several days I've had barely any pain during the day but get hit with the pain at night. This is since I've been home and mostly this weekend. The first night it was bad some of the pain was an 8. The next night a 6, and last night I don't remember but I was awake a lot. I've been wondering whether my bed was doing me any good. I told my husband we may need to switch sides, but in the mean time I tried something completely new. I have a major difficulty getting my surgical leg into bed. It feels like a dead weight and I have to pull it up with my other hand. I think this began after I may have injured that hip as it hurts more and more. Last night I decided to get into bed from the end of the bed. That way I can get in toward the middle which gives me more support. I sit down and straighten my left lag. While keeping it straight I scootch my bottom backwards with my good leg. In about two moves I'm in the right place. I got off for potty breaks and back on using that method. It was a lot less pain that way. Tonight I had my husband on the end of the bed with me so I'd have help if needed to get my cleaned PED back on. Something gave under the bed. A few moments later we heard it again. Once I had that sock back on he lifted the bed. The wheel fell off. I tried to find the hole it fit into and another piece fell off. I'd already been wondering if I'd sleep better there since I feel no pain during the day in the recliner. Now he can't get upset about me sleeping out here. ADDITIONAL INFO: Anna's response hit the nail on the head for those finding this after Monday 6:25am or so est. That's the time I gave a long reply with more info. I'll also be writing, possibly a shorter post, about my findings.

Sometimes the bed is the major problem for the pain. Many nights my husband sleeps in the recliner, especially when he has back pain.

@MarshaMusselman You surely needed to rest more because a surgery is a tiring matter. When my husband cannot sleep on the bed, he goes downstairs on the couch too. He says that the position on the couch is better for his back. I hope you can rest well from now on.

You are spot on, Anna. I thought about testing it out, but probably would put it off since the bed seems easier to work with. I'm glad the bed broke since, even though I slept less hours, I did get better sleep than the past three days. I was curious because I've slept about four hours each day in the recliner during the day without hurting. What I didn't know was whether I was awake more at night because I slept so long in the day or not. Now I wonder whether that really was the case at all. Maybe I needed the extra sleep in the day because I wasn't getting enough during the nights. Tonight I may try out the couch so my legs and especially ankles are higher. Then if the bed were to break on hubby's side we could both get our sleep. I'll be writing something about this shortly.. I wonder whether I linked this reply if anyone would be up in arms over it. It would help keep my post shorter, lol.

@LadyDuck When I don't sleep too much during the day, I do okay at night. We got the bed fixed yesterday, but I won't move back there again until next week maybe. I've been trying to get my foot above my heart at least daily as the ankle is swollen.Unfortunately, I've not been able to do that yet and stay awake the whole time. So, then I'm awake for a bit at night too. Some days I can sleep well both in the day and the night and the others not so much.

do you think the recliner is more comfortable right now?

To a degree, yes it was. I since moved to the couch because I was concerned that the bed would break even more and my husband can sleep on the recliner but not the couch. He said no one would be comfortable on the couch, but I've proved him wrong. I've slept there this past week and slept well when I didn't sleep too much in the daytime. We figured out the correct spot where the wheel on the bed came off and were able to get it back on again. I'll be moving back to the bed one of these days, probably tomorrow night. If it snows tonight I want to see it out the living room draped before getting up so we can prepare accordingly. That means my husband would need to get out there early to do a bit of shoveling if we get the three inches in the forecast. It will probably be just a dusting like we've gotten these past four times..

@jillybean1222 My bed is big enough that I don't bother my husband. We did get the bed fixed as I realized the wheel went into a different place than I at first thought. I'm planning on trying again tonight and see whether I can get a better nights sleep or not. I know the bed is pretty old, ten to twelve years and needs replacing but we need a new work vehicle first and maybe next year can get a newer bed. How long ago did she have the surgery, is she doing well and is she going to have physical therapy? If she has any questions I may be able to help unless she has someone easily accessible there. Did they have a joint camp type thing while she was in the hospital? I'm sure all hospitals don't do these but they do help a lot.

I am sorry you are having pain, but it sounds as if it is improving. . . slowly. There are times I cannot get anything to type correctly.

I put that first paragraph there so when it happened I wouldn't have to explain and it didn't happen at all. I wasn't done writing when you read it, but I must be tired since I hit the post button and later the edit one long before I was ready. I still need to redo the first and second paragraphs but I finished my story about the recliner.

I figured out what was causing the extra words, Heather. It seems I have a sort of swipe texting type thing on my tablet. Why it's showing up now I don't know but maybe because before I mostly did my mylotting on the desktop computer and my gaming on my tablet. Now I'm using both so I'm not sitting with my feet down too long. I may write about it more later on, or not. Maybe when I run out of things to talk about.

@MarshaMusselman Yes I did and as I was reading, it was as if I could feel the pain you were growing through so I uttered a prayer for you.

Since your comment showed up 43 seconds ago maybe you read my whole post? I was in the process of writing when I hit the start discussion tab too soon. I'll be sleeping in the recliner tonight and that may show whether the bed was the main problem with the pain I had at night.

Wherever you are in less pain and sleeping better is the place to be so if it is the recliner, so be it!! Getting your rest is important to your recovery.

a recliner can be altered so the position you want to assume is placed so you can sleep comfortably. i hope your back won't hurt as well. is your recliner cushioned?

Our recliner has simple cushions but it's probably over twenty to thirty years old. My parents had it when living at the house where I grew up. They moved to a different house and took that recliner and it's twin with them in 1991. My mom is using the twin in her new place. This recliner is in better condition than the other one we had, but maybe down the road we can replace it with a newer version, it's just not in the budget right now. Tonight, I'll try sleeping in the bed again. It's easier for me to get my leg up and down now and hopefully I won't wiggle that wheel off again. I really don't know how it got knocked off since it's fits solidly into a small pipe with a hole in the bottom. I thought the wheel fell from the frame itself and when I felt for the hole another piece of the frame fell off so I didn't look any further. Later, or another day, my husband picked the bed up in a different manner and it was then I saw where it should fit, duh. I'm hoping the work it takes me to get in and out won't break any other part off.
