HOOKED ON A SMOKE.

No, not me! I am a bit worried about a distant relative who appears to be hooked on smoking ganja. Whenever he visits us he disappears periodically on the grounds to do his smoking under a tree. After hearing so much about the negatives related to ganja smoking I expected him to be acting a bit weird -- especially after hearing that he has been a smoker for the past twenty years, but I noticed no strange behavior - he appears to be a normal, intelligent , energetic young man. However, I am aware that anything done in excess cannot be good, so I cornered him one day and advised him to at least cut back on the number he smoked each day as overuse could eventually result in damage to his system. He replied that he doesn't inhale like other smokers do - he exhales the smoke. Now I have never smoked anything in my life, so I have no idea if what he told me makes any sense. However, I am thinking that if persons can be affected by second hand smoke - then what about the actual smoker? even though he may be exhaling and not inhaling? Any thoughts on this?

Some people don't think about health when satisfying their desires.

I have no idea about the 'inhale-exhale' thingie. But I have a few relatives too who smoke quite a lot but seem well till now. It's so funny that people smoke even when there's a warning on the pack!

I think he's just telling you that so you won't worry. If its in his mouth, it is in his mouth and probably inhaled too...I can't imagine anyone spending money on smokes (although I don't know what ganja is) and not inhaling it...

@Kandae11 We all know you can't get high unless you inhale so I'm thinking he is not telling the truth about the inhale part..back in the day of college craziness I tried it and fortunately I couldn't handle it so I gave up on pot...it was way too strong for me...

@PainsOnSlate I suppose certain things that give one a nice feeling can become addictive - but the feeling cannot last forever. I remember years ago when I started on my diet and eat healthy journey, I succeeded because I told myself the pleasure of eating that big slice of chocolate cake will only last as long as the last crumb - about five minutes - then I have the remaining hours of the day to feel guilty. I figured it wasn't worth it.

He sounds pretty hooked to me. I hope you can convince him to at least cut down.

@JudyEv I could leave him to dig his own grave, but I don't like to see people being destructive to their health - so I will try my best.

Good thing my dad stopped smoking already. I heard there is a third-hand smoke also. If I remember right, it is that smoke that lingers on one's hair or clothes after going to bars/clubs or being with someone who smokes.

Therefore if even third-hand can be harmful - what about the actual smoker then ? even if he exhales and doesn't inhale?

Actually the second hand smoke die easily than those who really smoke... Which is so unfair. I mean we take care of ourselves and they just don't care. Anyway I hope that relative of yours will take your advice. It is not really good to smoke. And I am also praying for our country try for the smile ban in. Public places.

I is a shame but he will never quit until he is ready and trust me, if he does it this much, he inhales.

I suppose he will always come up with an excuse to continue - like the exhaling bit.

Not being a smoker, I really don't know the answer to this but if he needs it so often it is because it is affecting him (my reasoning)

Well I do know that there are smokers who inhale deeply which is very bad, inhale just a bit and those who sort of let the smoke puff in and right back out again. I too am no expert but I still think he should curb his habit.

Since I am also a non smoker, I guess I would be interested to know what benefit he is getting from his activity. Maybe it helps him cope in some way.

I honestly don't think it makes that much of a difference - inhaling or exhaling - but what do I know.

He is bullsh*tting you, Kandase! You cannot exhale something if you don't inhale it first! He would be getting nothing whatsoever out of smoking pot if he didn't inhale the smoke, anyway. It has to be inhaled or put into your system before you get anything out of it.

Smoking is not good. I've heard so many theories related to it. Like when taken with tea it kills hunger and relive stress. One has to see the long term hazards associated with it and should not follow the false call of the id.
