Looking down on our place

I thought you might like to see an aerial view of our house and the immediate surrounds. We live in south-west Western Australia. A friend of Vince's made his own ultra-light plane. After checking Vince's life insurance , I allowed him to go for a joy-ride over our property and he was able to take some photos. In the middle of the photo near the top is a small, bluish patch. This is the Music Shack and the green, cleared area is where the people sit for the concerts. The small patch of trees between the Shack and the house blew over in a storm and are no longer there. The yellow line going away from the house are the front steps. To the right of the house, the round shape is our big 100,000 litre rainwater tank (22,000 imperial gallons, 26,400 US liquid gallons). Next to the tank is the small workshop and further right again is the woodshed. In front of the workshop you can see the bus on the road which runs down one boundary. Most of the bush on the left is within our property. So as you can see we are nicely tucked away in the bush with no neighbours to be seen. We have 18 acres here.

When we had the farm some enterprising pilot and his mate flew over hundreds of farms then turned up at the door with proofs to view and purchase. Just about everyone in our area ended up with a framed aerial photo of their farm.

Wow, what a great place to hang your hat! I would love a place with that much acreage. We one day are hoping to purchase land where we can build a home and be able to plant a garden, have farm animals, and hopefully a large area where my husband can hunt.

@JudyEv I hope so too. But, if we don't, we will turn this place into our dream home.

It is interesting to see a bird view of our own houses. And thanks a lot for the clear explanation of the details. Currently on CCTV is a bird view of the landscape of the whole country, beginning from my hometown Shanghai. Great view from a different angles, which i am so proud of.

we used to have an Ariel view of our house and street at my mum's house but I think my sister has it now at her place - they are always fascinating to see though it worries me how many times I might be on shots taken by satellites and drones nowadays

Yes, drones are a real worry I think. Despite notices saying 'no drones' we saw one being used at Uluru. Vince spoke to the guy and when we came back that way they had left.

@arthurchappell Uluru is a sacred site to the aborigines and they ask that you treat it with respect. No drones is part of that.

What a great piece of property you have and lots of privacy. That is great. It gives us a better idea now when you talk about your home.

You have quite the nice compound there. Does the rainwater tank provide all you water needs, or does it supplement a groundwater source? Have you thought of solar panels for the roof? Your site looks ideal for such.

The tank supplies all the house needs. There is a bore (also good water if needed) for stock troughs, garden and any irrigation we want to do. We irrigate the patch in front of the Shack and an area where the cars park and where Vince occasionally practises his golf. We have a solar hot-water system with an electric booster if the days are overcast for too long. Just recently we looked at becoming completely solar-powered but it is too expensive to change over at the moment.

Thanks. We might get to 40C a few times each summer and high 30C at other times and we get a few frosts in the winter so it's pretty mild compared to some places.

@katsmeow1213 Maybe I'll put up a floor plan of the house next. I don't know the dimensions of the lounge. I didn't think we'd get sixty in it either. There isn't any room for anything else but they do fit.

It is quite large I guess but pretty standard for here. We have four bedrooms, two bathrooms, open plan lounge and dining which lets us have 60 sitting guests for a house concert. The garden is pretty gross - mostly native plants and not cared for very well.

The first thing I tried to spot was your concert area (always thought that was so cool) - you really do have a huge lot for it! I can't even imagine having 18 acres - that would be a dream (our area, the properties are less than an acre).

Many of our suburban blocks are very small now. When I was a child most town blocks were 1/4 acre and people would have a chook (chicken) yard and grow vegetables.

All the water for the house comes from the tank. Even with all the guests we have we never look like running out. We have a bore as well for stock troughs, garden and any irrigation we want to do.

@BelleStarr If you lived in a big industrial city with a lot of pollution then your rainwater might become contaminated as it falls through the atmosphere but otherwise there should be no reason not to have one. And the water could always be used for the garden. But if you have plenty of water anyway, it may not be worth the expense.

@JudyEv - Ms Judy - I DO envy you your surroundings. We are going to try for something like that after we take a year to find the "right" one to purchase. Good aerial. Glad Vince's insurance did not come into play for real... -Gus-
