I just learned about the new mattress and box spring fee. This isn't everywhere in the United States, but was surprised its not just California and the other states weren't the ones I would have considered right away. Did you know about this fee? The other states are Connecticut and Rhode Island. People that buy a new mattress or box spring pay $11 that goes to fund recycling. Mattress Recycling Council stated over 1 million mattress have been recycled. What do you do with an old mattress or box spring?

One of my neighbors offered to pick it up to avoid the delivery charge, so then wasn't sure what I was going to do with the mattress and box spring. My neighbor that helped me wanted the box spring, so that is why I had a mattress problem. I learned a few minutes ago that the mattress is now for the neighbors dog across the street, who loves the new bed. Now I have two happy neighbors and I saved some money.

@Fishmomma That is very nice your neighbors are all happy :) It does cost to haul away if you did not give it to the person to take away when you got a new mattress.

We pay a $2 tax on each electronic item for recycling. We can bring the old mattress to a recycling center and it's free, but usually when you buy a new one the store take back the old one for recycling.

Here it depends whether I have it delivered, as some stores have hefty delivery fees. Its not good when we can rent a truck for a lot less or just go with a neighbor. I was lucky today, as the box spring a neighbor wants for a do it yourself project and another took the mattress.

@Fishmomma We usually have no fee for the delivery of this kind of big items and they take back the old ones for free.

Well, if when they are delivering your Mattress and Box Springs they are removing them and recycling them that is a Good thing. Here in WA if you take things to the dump they charge, and they charge to deliver items so I can see why they would do this.

I missed a potluck, so didn't know one of my neighbors wanted the mattress. Now the mattress is a dog bed and the box spring went to the neighbor that wants it for a do it yourself project. I wanted to save money, as need to stretch every dollar. The part time job is over for now and am trying to get everything purchased and pay the bills with the job money.
