She Was Attacked By Black Widow Spiders

A few years back, on a hot summer’s day, a woman in Spokane fell asleep on a couch that was outdoors. She awoke to find black widows all over her. She had been bitten several times. Her family rushed her to emergency and she was given a shot of the antidote. She lived to tell her story.
Apparently there was a black widow nest in the couch and the woman disturbed the nest. So they attacked the source.
Now that I have you all creeped out about sleeping on couches outdoors, here are some facts I have learned over the years either from articles by arachnologist or shows on PBS.
A black widow bite will not kill a heathy adult. If you do get bit by a black widow wash the spot right away with hand sanitizer or a good soap.
Once you are given the black widow antidote it will never be effective again. The antidote only works once.
Black widows usually do not bite unless they feel threatened. Or if they feel their “home” is threatened. Or if they think you are dinner. Many people have been bitten in outhouses when they sat down to do their business and didn’t make sure there wasn’t a spider web across the hole. Unfortunately these bites were usually on the genitals. Be happy outhouse are mostly a thing of the past.
The black widow got it’s name because after mating it will bite the male and kill it. However, there are males that are slick enough to escape to mate again although it is a rarity and a rarity they escape a second time.
Now here’s a spider story from my past. In the first grade we all lined up to enter the school. As we head into the school I saw a spider in the doorjamb. I pointed the spider out to a teacher. It was caught. Later on in the day the jar with the spider in it was passed around from class to class for students to see what a black widow looks like and its red hourglass on its abdomen.
I suppose if a black widow was found in a school today all the students would be sent home while the school was fumigated. But no such thing happened back in the days I was in grade school.
A final thought about spiders. They are just as afraid of you as you are of them. That is why they are usually hidden.
I hope I was able to teach you a few things like never fall asleep on an outdoors couch. Oh, yeah, and a few things about black widows as well.

That is quite horrifying and glad to know that lady survived and also you that you were not bitten by that spider.
I do have some idea about couches, as there was an old couch under a house that I once lived in, well under the high porch. I was sick of looking at it and decided to pull it out and got attacked by a swarm of yellow jackets. My poor shorts.

Eek! This reminds me of our friend's house . . . when they moved out of the apartment to their new house, they took the old floral couches and left them on their backyard porch . . . and there they have stayed. Now I think guests sit there when they have their get togethers . . . but I wouldn't dare sit on them. My kids have very sensitive skin, so they know not to sit there . . . they've gotten itchy from those couches before. I don't know if anyone has ever gotten spider bites there, but the thought was always on the back of my mind . . . plus they have ant problems near it too . . . I don't know what could be hiding under that couch. Plus with that multicolored floral design, you wouldn't see any spider or ant or black widow coming. I didn't know the black widow antidote was only effective once

@RichardMeister Makes me itchy just thinking about it. I suppose insects want a place to sit on the couch too
- but I wouldn't want to sit next to or on a bug that bites
!
I guess it's best to avoid black widows period!

@much2say Yes, it's best to avoid black widows.
Speaking of bugs. When I was a kid we used to leave our shoes out on the porch in the summertime. One morning I went out and tried to put on one of my shoes. It wouldn't go on and I keep hearing the funny barely audible squealing sound. I decided to look into my shoe. There was a pine beetle staring back at me. If you don't know what a pine beetle is it's a beetle about 3 inches long and a inch wide. I propelled my shoe halfway across the yard. I retrieved my shoe and turned the toe up and smacked it a couple of times until the beetle fell out. The lesson I learned was if your shoe are left outside always check inside before putting them on.

Couches left outdoors has always been a bit creepy to me because you don't know what bugs, spiders, bees etc. has crawled into them.
Yes, the black widow antidote is effective only once, so it's best not to get it unless you absolutely have to. I really don't know why that is.

Their eyesight is really bad and they react on vibration of their webs to hunt. If it's an incredibly large disturbance in their web, they often know that it is a danger to themselves and will not attack. Odd that she was bitten by several, since they'll eat each other.

I don't know how many times she was bitten since the news story said "several times."

@RichardMeister I'm just saying that it is weird that there were multiple spiders. The same one could have bitten her multiple times.

@OneOfMany Yes this is possible. I'm just going with what the news report said. Of course when they said she was covered with black widows that could have meant only a couple. When something like this happens to someone things sometimes get exaggerated.

You're welcome. I understand you have some horrendous spiders in Australia.

I don't know what spiders you have in Alberta. I have never liked sitting on couches outdoors because it is unknown what might be in the couch.

@paigea Brown Recluse in Canada? We do not have them in the Spokane area because the winters are to harsh for them to survive here. We do have a Hobo Spider that some unknowledgeable people have claimed is a cousin to the Brown Recluse but in researching I found they are not.

@RichardMeister We have apparently a Brown Recluse that has a poisonous bite, but it is rare and I only know of one person who had trouble with a spider bite. The rest are harmless and eat other insects, so the good guys in my opinion.

I don't think it was a discarded couch. I think it was one they put out in the yard for the summer to sit on. But I really don't know for sure.

Don't know much about black widow spiders and don't recall if I ever encountered one. I appreciate spiders generally because they help keep the mosquito and other bug population down and they are so skilled at spinning webs.
