Do you think a university degree is really necessary?

Why do many people think that they can only be successful if they only have a diploma? Without a prospect of growth, without looking at a better horizon... What is the importance of a "simple" piece of paper? I think creativity and willpower to win are worth a lot more to become a winner. What do you think about it?

Many people can be very successful without a university education. There are many people who have degrees but cannot get into the profession they are qualified for!

That is what I found Gary..many counterparts had studied for years, hard to get a job, whereas my trade, I was never out of work.

It depends on parents too. My parents were fans of higher education, which is why I have my Masters degree. If there was any indication of needing it, I'd have gone for my doctorate as well, but I don't use my B.S. or M.S. really. I did learn what I liked to do at college, but haven't been able to chase after it until I proved that the stuff I learned failed to get me employed. And since I only started doing what I like, I haven't shown that I'm making great headway either. I have a long way to go! Had I realized what all the signs meant in high school (which I displayed a ton of them) I would have known my path and would have been working on it for the last 12 years... but alas, I did not see the connections, and neither did anyone else before I went into higher education.

Education is very important! But it does depend on your situation, like the area that you live in, how much money you have saved, if you can have family and friends that can help you when you fall and so on. For instance I know some major league football players that knew in their high school years that they are in their 30 to 40 age they will need to stop playing ball so they went to college and continued to play ball, but continued in a pursuing a back up career. They have started businesses After all not all the retired players can become sports commentators However I do know people that graduated from college and with so much so-called progress, sometimes their jobs/ career's get deleted from life and that person may or may not have family or friends that can help them. Then I do know other people that have graduated from college and have been very successful. Then there are some famous people that made it big that did not even graduate from high school.......business men and inventors such as Walt Disney, Richard Branson, John D. Rockefeller, Dave Thomas and George Eastman. Music pioneers such as Lois Armstrong,Elton John, Jay z, Ray Charles as well as the singer and actress Julie Andrews. Also actors and actresses such as Daniel Radcliff, Jessica Simpson, Robert DiNiro and music producer Simon Cowell, journalist Peter Jennings, novelist Jackie Collins. Sports legends such as George Forman, Yogi Berra, Joe Dimaggio and the beautiful late Princess Diana.

I don't think it's worth it but if you want a real high end paying job then i guess a degree you will need. I don't have a degree and still have a good paying job. I did go to college but never finished as I couldn't pass Algebra 2 and i don't plan to go back unless it's necessary.

There are two sides of having diploma or not. The most important thing is to have self-determination in chasing certain dreams in life.

As a possessor of a useless university degree, I would say you are better off learning a trade than getting a worthless degree in Humanities. A profession like plumbing may not have the glamour appeal of the white collar world but there's always a need for plumbers and they make good money.

This depends on what you want to do for a living. I use to be a teacher and a degree was required to teach in any public school. My daughter wants to be a Librarian and a degree is required, so certain positions require a degree. Many people do attend college and don't use the degree at all. Its expensive and people need to decide if its worth spending the time at college and having to possibly spend a lot of years in debt.

It depends of the job you want to do. You will hardly get an executive job with a good salary in your 20's without an university degree, and in the administration good jobs are opened only to people with the right degrees, so these "pieces of paper" have their importance.

No I absolutely do not my friend. But that depends on a persons preference in life, what kind of work they would like to do. I always loved working with my hands, so I went to trade school and made more money than many of the university graduates who sat in my chair and were my clients a they often told me they were out of work, where as I was never out of work. So a degree can be very good for some, but it is not always the best option. I am only speaking from my own thoughts on this of course and my area here. I only went to school for my trade for a year tops. Meanwhile my counterparts spent many years of hard grueling study only to be disappointed. I am all for learning a trade first then if one wants to go on to university, they will always have the option to go back to the trade.

I think you need a diploma to get a decent job these days. However, a trade school is beneficial if you aren't interested in a university type diploma.Creativity and willpower are good qualities to have but I still think you need to get a diploma (or GED equivalent)

I think a University degree is not the only way to get oneself in a door to find employment. I believe it helps somewhat.

Absolutely not. The only way I would ever recommend college or a university to someone young is if they have a specific goal that requires the degree (medicine, law, engineering, etc.) but otherwise it's just a way to ensure you're steeped in debt for ages. Trade schools and specialized trades need people and one can do fine without college and all the liberal indoctrination they've become infamous for. Welders, truckers, plumbers and more can make great money without these colleges. Furthermore, unless one goes to an Ivy League or similar school, the degree isn't worth nearly what one would pay for it, anyhow.
