Buoy Oh Buoy

We have spent most of the day getting things organised for our car boot sale in Lowden, Western Australia. This is being held in a few days time. One of the items we found in the shed is a blue glass fishing buoy held in a knotted rope net. We have another orange plastic one and that will be sold too. I looked on Ebay to see if perhaps the glass buoy was worth anything and to my surprise it could be worth around $100. Of course, you have to find someone willing to pay that first. It would be nice if we could get a reasonable price for it. Rather than give it away for a pittance, we will bring it home if necessary and perhaps take it to an antique dealer. Now we're busy checking out a few other bits and pieces. Maybe something else will be worth more than a dollar or two. I think we should have started this task a day or two sooner!

You do need to get your buoy appraised as it may be vintage. There is value in Japanese glass buoys that wash up on shore.

Vince has had it for at least 50 years. If you don't mind me asking, how do you get vintage stuff valued? Do you just take it to an antique shop? I'm always worried we'll get ripped off. I guess we could take it to several.

@JohnRoberts Thanks. We checked Ebay which is how we discovered they might be worth a bit more than we thought.

@JudyEv You check ebay for similar items on sale. Go to an antique shop though you might get a low ball offer.

I hope so. At least we know now not to let it go for pennies.

I hope you get a good price for it-I think it would be worth a fair amount--but shipping it might be a problem

Yes, postage/courier/shipping charges in Australia have gone through the roof lately.

My parents had a summer home on the Chesapake Bay and we had those as decorations...I wonder where they went.

They're often seen here at beach cottages used as decorations.

Here we call these sales, a garage sale or yard sale. Because we sell things from our homes, in the yard or garage. When we take them to another place we call it a trade day or flea market. I hope you make a bunch of money!

I guess then it's a flea market. We've booked a space but it will be a small affair.

It is a small community and this is only their second sale so there may not be too many people there.

It may be of interest to a nautical collector, but I cannot imagine what practical use anyone would have for one.

No practical use at all - just a decorative piece. We often see them hanging on verandahs on seaside cottages.

@JudyEv I have seen some on eBay that cost more than $70. You can ask more for this one.

@LadyDuck We have decided we'll let it go for $100. If it sells, it is one less thing to worry about.

@JudyEv that is a lot of money.. I'm glad you've got a local buyer.... $5 million that's ridiculous... like you say .. no wonder the postal charges are so high....

Thanks. If it sells for $100 we'll be happy. Otherwise we might shop it round the antique shops. We have a couple of old prints to sell too so perhaps we can get someone out to look at the lot. We just costed sending 10kg of photographic gear to the Eastern states (of Australia) and it would cost $70!! It is just ridiculous. So the buyer in the East has said no thanks and someone from Bunbury is going to buy it. The CEO of our postal service was getting $5 million a year. No wonder our charges have gone sky-high!

@sueznewz2 I think $5 million is obscene. He has left that job now and I think the wage has gone down. The media got onto it and more or less forced a change. If the government didn't know about it, they should have.

I don't want to sell it for $10 if it is worth $100. We might leave it home till we find out a bit more about it. And thanks, we expect to have fun and that's a good start!

It is quite big. We could sell in on Ebay but postage costs here are very high. It could be good to get rid of it locally. There are several antique shops within reasonable range so perhaps we'll see what they'll give us for it.

I love it when something like that happens! I hope you get a good deal from it, it's a beautiful piece. So you're selling out of the boot of your car? I've only seen a sale like that once and it was a lot of fun going from car to car. Some brought tables to set their stuff on, some didn't. It also feels good to get rid of old things that are no longer used. It's like the whole house is cleaner!

It's called 'car boot' but we have a trailer load of hardware and we're taking a trestle to set things out on. And you're right about the house feeling cleaner and less cluttered - as long as at least some of the stuff sells.
