Rolling Stones Woz Here

Crawdaddy Club

In February of 1963, The Rolling Stones burst onto the scene. Well, actually it was the summer of '62 they made their club debut, but that following winter with Charlie Watts and Bill Wyman joining the group they appeared again at Richmond's Crawdaddy Club. Another well, actually! This later gig was thinly attended, but they were noticed and in only a few weeks The Rolling Stones were the resident band and from there the Hall of Fame was waiting. The Crawdaddy Club was in a shed like structure in the back of The Station Hotel, taken over from a defunct Jazz Club. The Station Hotel is gone, having become first a pub and now a restaurant. The Crawdaddy has moved to the Richmond Athletic Club. There used to be a plaque on the front of the building giving the history of the Crawdaddy and a certain musical group, but that has disappeared.

Very interesting. I never heard much of anything about their humble beginnings.

I was just a bit sad that it is no longer a pub, The Bull and Bush!

I was vaguely aware of the Stones when I was younger, but not really until the 70s

@Ronrybs I do not exactly remember when I started to like the Rolling Stones, may be the mid 60's.

@TiarasOceanView I didn't think about it at the time, but @JohnRoberts was thinking it may have been stolen and it wouldn't surprise me to find that it is a good guess

I love a lot of their music. My stepfather - in - law played bass guitar with them and told me that Mick Jagger was a fine young man

When I was younger I didn't much care for them, but nowadays, I really like them. The same is true for a lot of music back then, for me

It's a shame in a way, that the plaque has gone.

@Ronrybs I wonder if the site will just fade into oblivion. How did you know where to look?

Yes, it took me ages to find. The information booth in the rail station had no idea what I was talking about! I knew it was the Station Hotel, but no one had a clue as to where it was. I needed that plaque!

I wonder if the plague was stolen. The Stones' beginnings are not as designated as the Beatles in Liverpool.

I recall seeing it on a video and it is was fairly large, but some folk will nick anything, nailed down or not!

@Ronrybs There is a street in Melbourne named after AC/DC and there's a problem with the street signs being stolen.

@JohnRoberts Typical fans! I wonder if the street was connected, beyond being named, in any way to the group? Those are the connetions I like to find

It is a bit sad, the place should be remembered. Maybe the owner got fed up with peope like me putting the diners off!
