A Brazilian footballer, Bruno Fernandes de Souza, was sentenced to 22 years in prison for the murder of his mistress in 2013. He was married at the time. He had been accused of torture, kidnapping and a whole host of other things. He chopped up her body and fed it to the dogs and buried some under concrete. He was recently released pending an appeal and has been since signed to a contract with Boa Esporte. He said in an interview that mistakes happen and he made a mistake. Really? Should this killer be on the streets playing football while he waits, possibly years, for his appeal to be heard?

Was he sorry because the dogs got an indigestion ? I studied criminal law, and to have attended to a lot of criminal trials, it is a very hard job to defend somebody like this man. The best strategy is probably not to regret or not regret to have done a horrible crime like this one, but to protest, scream, cry like a mad man the first day of the trial, until the judge decides to evict the accused person from the court room during the trial. I do not know exactly the law in Brazil, but usually, when it comes to criminal matters, the appeal has not a suspensive effect, and he has to stay in prison. This decision is weird, except if the judges are thinking that he will get only a small sentence on the appeal court.

@Freelanzer Right. Difficult to see here a crime of passion not premeditated.

Some countries ten to treat their athletes like royalty and this seems to be the case. Forget what he did to this poor woman and her family - he make a mistake. How premeditated murder turns into a "mistake" is beyond me.

I can't believe he is still allowed to be loose. I suppose he's raking in a fortune as well.

The sad thing is that when he was released he got several offers to play with different clubs. Somethign is wrong with the moral fabric of some.

That's a bit more than a 'mistake'. Geesh! what humans will do to one another amazes me.

No he shouldn't and what is more alarming is that he calls pre-meditated murder - a mistake

He should be punished. It is easy to say for having a big mistake. That's a lame answer for a killer. I am sure if he is in my country; the president is too eager to terminate him.
