Fashion that I don't understand: High Heeled Shoes

Fashion I don't understand.  Enter the high heeled shoe.  Now in another time and place I have often admired the beauty of the high heel and it's graceful curves and arcs.  As a teen I even tried them, at that point in time I was better able to ignore the pain in my feet.  Nowadays I cannot stand it when my feet hurt and as a general rule I look for comfortable but fashionable shoes, comfort being a must!   So for now I prefer my high heels flat on the ground, and my fashion high heeled shoes in the form of art - not to be worn.   Women: do you wear heels? Men: what do you think of women in heels?  This article tries to shed some light:
A history of high heels, beginning in Ancient Egypt to modern stiletto.

Yea I don't and never have worn high heeled shoes, I'm like you it's all about comfort and high heels are not in my opinion.

I experimented a lot in my youth and carried it off well into a couple of years, especially my working years. But now I prefer ground level foot wear and I am not embarrassed by it. Comfort first. to the men I say...YOU wear it!

I agree! Comfort first. If my feet aren't happy, the rest of me isn't. -- I wonder why men don't have so many uncomfortable fashion items....

I think women wear high heels are sexy for me. They seem so pretty in this kind of footwear.

Heels are attractive for sure, I just wonder how they became such a symbol

@FayeHazel I guess it is a trend that celebrities had being using it. The viewers find that their idol seems so classy while wearing the heels.

@FayeHazel , I am tall so never had to worry about high high heels. I like flat sandals, wedges or sneakers. I can't stand my feet being sore, comfort comes first.

Did you find them uncomfortable? ON all accounts, I agree, I wish I got along better with heels, but I don't, hurts the feet too much. I too prefer flats

I wore my last pair of high heeled shoes in my 30s--hate, hate them--then and now!

Lol! It's a shame they look cool - but I agree if my feet hurt I wont' be happy, and if I'm not happy I'm probably not attractive..... so defeats the purpose.

@FayeHazel Yes, if you wear a four inch heels for over a couple of hours, your feet and calves will suffer..

High heels is something I've never been able to wear. I try to find nice looking flat heeled shoes. My feet are very happy with me in a nice pair of shoes.

At times it's challenging to find nice flats, do you find that too? I wish someone would come up with comfortable shoes that look nice, too. :-)

They are attractive, wish I got along with them. The article in the link suggests that they began as men and womens footwear - for butchers - to keep their feet away from whatever was on the floor in that line of work. I wonder how they traveled from that function to fashion symbol....

Me too. IN my younger day I ventured out more in heels, ignoring the pain in my feet. Now I like comfort.

Ah, I understand. Technically I still do own a pair - they are just so nice that I can't get rid of them... but I've never worn them

Back when I was a lot younger, I was known to wear them quite often. Then for various reasons due to Health mainly I had to quit wearing them. But being 5' 9 1/2 it never took much to be taller than everyone when I could wear them.

I haven't worn high heels in years. I really don't know how I could stand the pain or not fall and break a leg. There was a time when I wore 4 - 6 inch heals regularly

Oh wow! When you wore heels - did they not hurt at that time? Or was there some other technique to it? I agree, even on short heels I wobble so much I fear I would fall and break my face. Ha!

In my younger days I loved high heels but back then they were around 3". Now the ones they have are ridiculously high and I can't understand how they became so fashionable. I'm too old for high heels so this isn't a fashion option for me anymore and like you I prefer flats and comfy shoes as opposed to hurting feet and being stylish.

Go back a few hundred years and it was men in high heels, they even wore them while on horseback. There are a few pictures in the National Portrait Gallery showing the fashion. Being a little over 6 feet tall, I avoid high heels, it is a long way to fall!
