Diary Thursday 6th April 2017

A sickening start to the day as I got a phone call to say I am through to the interview stage of the call centre recruitment process, pushing me ever closer to taking a role that will involve hour long walk to work, happy clappy games to control the staff and dealing with irate mobile phone customers seeking improved services. I’m obliged to attend the interview tomorrow afternoon. Again, I stress this is a mandatory recruitment process, where even no access to public transport for some shifts means over 60 minutes walk to get to work for 7 am in all weathers. Once over my anger, fears, distress, and despair enough, I went to the job club to look at other work option out there. The journey was complicated by the local bus service facing temporary diversion that seemed to confuse drivers and passengers alike. Arthur Chappell

@ShifaLk I don't mind long walks but not at or before dawn right before a 7 hour work shift and possibly even on Xmas Day

It seems unreasonable you would be expected to take a job to which you must walk an hour each way due to a lack of transit service. I hope you are able to find something else with more reasonable accommodations.

I cannot believe they expect you to walk an hour, that makes no sense to me at all.

Why did you apply in the first place?

@sol_cee I never applied - the British welfare system picked it for me and forced me to go for it with a threat to terminate my benefits if I refused to co-operate

I had a call center job that I had to walk to. And it wasn't even mandatory. I hated it when it snowed.

@EMuhungi not yet but I have an interview tomorrow - sadly it is not a job I want as the company is questionable but I have no choice but to proceed with the application process

Too bad something else couldn't come up. Timely and all. A nice brisk morning walk in the deep winter months is really something great to look forward to. NOT!!

I sometimes have to walk to and then stand at bus stops in the cold, wind and rain for buses that are always late. Still, that was my choice! Although it's not fair, it's also not undoable unfortunately. Unless you have bad knees?! Besides, you're probably panicking over nothing. Either they won't offer you the role because of your credit history, or they will and the job will only last a few days because of the big turnovers these companies have!

You have some inhumane task-masters there. I do hope you don't get the job.
