How could you not like it?

I am at my wits end to understand this riddle. I have noticed that there are some discussions (which includes mine also) which have more 'responses' than 'likes'. If a discussion has more likes but less responses, then it looks logical. I am unable to understand that how come a user do not 'like' a discussion and post a response on it? If you are responding to a post it means that you could relate to that post and it indirectly means that you have liked that post. My point is - if you have liked a post, what prevents you from not clicking the 'like' icon? It is possible that some of the users may not press the 'like' icon inadvertently but are you the one? or do you deliberately not press the 'like' icon? I always 'like' a post if I am going to respond to it. There could be some exceptions, if a post is about some some tragic incident or death etc., I may not click the ''like'' icon but I may post my response.

I don't see a problem here. A member may not like a post and may want to express his or her negative impression in a comment. Unfortunately, this site has no 'Dislike' button. I'd often like to have one. @dpk262006 @JolietJake

@MALUSE - I agree with the views expressed by our respected friend @JolietJake If a member does not like a post and wants to write something negative about that post, it is fine. In that case s/he not pressing the like button, is understandable. But I have seen comparatively very less percentage of responses, which are written in a negative tone. Most of us write in a positive or neutral manner, therefore, not pressing the like button is beyond my comprehension. I won't recommend to add disagree icon under discussions/comments, as it could be misused and if it is misused could demoralize the users.

I am against the dislike button, because it becomes the "revenge button". All those who are jealous will dislike just for their own pleasure. This is what happened in Bubblews, they finally removed the dislike button after many of those who used the smartphone pressed the dislike by mistake. Here we would have the same problem

@JolietJake I fully agree with you, I have already seen this childish attitude from the users in other sites.

well, i have some discussions that have more comments than likes, and i understand it.maybe the commenter does not agree with what is posted, but makes a comment to show his point or opinion, AND that is just good.

It doesn't make sense to me. On the one hand a user is not liking a post, but posting comment/response. S/he is free to voice his/her opinion. His/her disagreement with the discussion doesn't mean that s/he has not liked the topic of the discussion.

@ridingbet Yes, it is not necessary that a user has to press the 'like' icon on the post on which he is going to respond. Responses to this discussion reveal that there are many reasons due to which many users don't press the 'like' icon.

@dpk262006 it is not necessary that you have to like a post and then comment on it. we have difference in opinion, and commenting clears whatever vague ideas one has.yes, i sometimes comment but not like.

I also noticed that. There are more responses on my posts than like. Though, i know others when they read a post would readily respond , forgetting to like it. Unlike me , who has the habit of liking before responding. to me liking means i like it or an acknowledgment tha i have read the post.

Like you, I first press 'like' icon before responding to a post. If I have not liked a post, how I am supposed to respond to it. You have concluded that it is there forgetfulness and nothing else?

@dpk262006 Yes, I am sure of that. The eagerness to respond makes them forget to like first.

@dpk262006 Yes, it was the same when we wrote for Bubblews. Many do not even fully read the discussions, they have a quick look and then comment.

What difference does it make if someone does not like a discussion he responded to? he is still interacting about the discussion. also it could be that as a user responding I feel my focus is on responding. Or may be mylot can by default add like if some one responds to a discussion

You are right it makes no difference if someone doesn't like a post but chooses to interact. You have given a good suggestion that it could be default 'like' if someone is responding to a post.

@vijay_2016 Yes, number of likes helps a user to get good standing in 'Top Rated Discussions'. However, I am not much bothered about this aspect. If a discussion has large number of likes and figures in any of the categories, it necessarily does not mean that discussion is really meaningful.
8 Apr 17
@dpk262006 only later I realised that number of likes may contribute in qualifying a discussion as 'Top rated discussion'. That's a cool achievement for user. So may be I am wrong, likes are important

To 'like' a post and to not to respond to it is understandable. However, commenting on a post without pressing 'like' icon appeared strange to me, therefore I started this post. Respondents have given different reasons for not pressing 'like' icon. If you have time, just go through the responses.

I always "like" when I respond to a discussion (unless I somehow forgot). Oh but there have been times where I have "like"d a discussion but had to go do something right after - and never came back to the discussion because by then I had forgotten about it! I wish we could get to everything here, but it's just too difficult!

I understand that you press the like button if you have liked a post and you are going to respond to it. It is fine that sometimes, we may press the like button and may not reply to the discussion due to one reason or the other. After reading responses to this discussion, I have come to know about various reasons for not pressing the like button. You should also go through the responses, these responses seem interesting to me.

My opinion is if they don't push the button for the" like" it is done on purpose, especially if they have been here a long time. I'm thinking of doing the same to those who do it to me... fair is fair...right now I always read, comment and like, it just makes sense if you do one, what not all...

I agree that you don't like many things but if you are responding to a post, should it not be construed that you liked it and you felt like saying something on the post (for or against)?

@ms1864 Your explanation about pressing 'like' icon seems logical. In brief - if you can't relate to a post, you normally don't press 'like'. There may be some posts which lack in quality of content, yet you respond to those posts for the sake of responding or for the sake of spending your time.

not really... I only like posts that actually give me a 'feel good' vibe. You know....something about it that i resonated with....or perhaps something was said well in the post... things like that is what makes me like a post. if someone writes a post about say....their very busy day....or a question or complaint about mylot.....or the weather... these might be things that i respond to ..but there might not be anything in the post that struck me as 'good writing' ...so i might not press the 'like' button on it...but i commented... for the sake of time pass.. you see what i mean? basicly...what I 'like' means a bit more to me than commenting.

Well, I think one can do respond to your discussions without liking them as may be he did not like what you are saying and wanted to express his views. I have experienced this in my discussions where people were disagree with me and represented what they think about it.

I always press the "like" button when I comment...usually. But on rare occasions, I come across discussion I find hard to "like" but still would like to express my opposing views through a comment. Examples would be posts that clearly express a prejudice against race, religion, minorities, outlandish declaration defying logic or lacking in civility.
