Do Dreams Come True?

I had a curious dream last night. I was in a pub I used to frequent. The experience was quite vivid. There were quite a few customers and the noise was the usual, happy buzz of conversation littered with good-natured obscenities and the sun shone through the window, making solid shafts of light in the tobacco smoke ... that is how i knew this was an experience from the past - smoking is no longer allowed in any pubs! So, it was the Old Red Lion! As I was standing at the bar, waiting to be served, I heard a familiar voice at my elbow. It was Arthur, whom I haven't seen for years and, in fact, I don't now know what has become of him. Just at that moment, the barman asked what I was having. "A pint of Old Speckled Hen", I replied and added "and One For Arthur". "What are you drinking, old mate?" I asked him. "I think I'll have a glass of wine, if you don't mind", he replied. "Red or white?", I enquired. "Red.", he said, "Definitely Red!" "Like your politics!" I joked and he laughed. "More of That" he said "and I'll see you outside!" Of course, I knew he didn't mean it. He was always a good-natured fellow, even though he was a raving Commie, always going on rallies and demonstrations. It was at that point that I woke up, got dressed and went out to buy the paper. It contained a list of the Grand National runners, of course, since that race happens at 5:15 today, and, as I scanned it, I had that curious, creeping feeling up my spine, for there were all four names as they had occurred in my dream! Naturally, I just had to go out again and lay out a pound each way on each one! Now, whatever you do, please DON'T wish me "Good luck!" That will definitely break the magic! We shall just have to see what we shall see. I'll let you know what happens later.

I think that I've only once had a dream about a place which I had never visited before (and, in the dream, it seemed to be somewhere I knew well, though, when I woke, I realised that it was unfamiliar). Then, a few days later, I was visiting a place - a garden, I think - and found it strangely familiar. Then I recognised that it was the place in my dream.

@owlwings It's strange when it happens, it's a sort of déjà vu, may be we have seen that place before, when we were very young and we do not remember. I was dreaming that my father was dying exactly at the moment that it happened, it was not a nice dream.

@LadyDuck No, indeed! Not a nice dream and even less so that it was true. Perhaps you take comfort, though, that he was able to say goodbye.

How odd is that? Does that happen very often to you? Hope it goes well for you.

I drew Cocktails at Dawn out of the hat in the work sweep; at 80:1, unlikely to feature highly, if at all.

@owlwings I've a man on the inside - daughter's bf has a job flipping burgers in one of the chow vans at the Aintree track today. That's as close as either of us is likely to get to a win I suspect.

Was that really a dream or time travel...? When I was in high school I dreamt that the boy who had the locker next to mine had shaved off his moustache, and when I got to school I saw that he had indeed shaved it off. That's the only time I can think of of having a dream come true, and I never figured out the significance of it.

It would be really nice if it were time travel. I have a rather nice story in the pipeline about time travel but that has to wait for another day (and it might be too long for here).

If this happens right before the race, that will be fantastic. Perhaps whoever gives you the dream wants you to go back to the pub and buy a round for everyone there.

My premonitory dreams are very odd and confused, there are "symbols" I understand once I experience what the dream tried to tell me, therefore they're useless! I've never dreamed of numbers or names I could bet on, that would be awesome.

I don't generally believe that dreams can predict the future, but am keen to believe that maybe we have lived these lives before and so it could be that. However, regardless of my views, I bet you're kicking yourself that you didn't put more money on One for Arthur!

One For Arthur was the winner. The other three came nowhere (and Definitely Red was the favourite).
