The only Hex sign south of the Mason-Dixon Line!

The hex sign in the photo is a folk art sign from Pennsylvania Dutch county. My mother-in-law bought it to me years ago. I have a few of them and I can say I've never seen any others in the south, at least in this part of the south! I don't speak German, but I'm pretty sure is says "Welcome". It is similar in many ways to barn paintings in the south. Since we are from New Jersey which is a neighbor of Pennsylvania Dutch country, I always loved hex signs. I wanted a very large one and one trip back to Tennessee we stopped at a store that had several of the super large hex signs. While my husband was busy looking at something else I decided to help myself to a sign which I hard hardly reach. Unfortunately, I knocked the entire display over and was so embarrassed that we left the store after saying "I'm sorry' many times. This hex sign has been up since we moved here almost 4 years ago. Several people have looked at it in wonder, but didn't ask what it was all about. I so badly wanted to say, "It's a hex sign and since you asked I'm putting one on you!" Photo is mine.

My father in law was from Butler PA and he lived in Kentucky from 1968 to 2011 and he always had a hex sign on his barn or house. Usually it was one he painted himself. He painted on EVERYTHING! He was quite the folk artist.

the ones I have are mass produced for sure! My husband sprayed them with poly to help protect them from the elements.

@AbbyGreenhill He often copied them. He had the one in your picture on his barn, but he painted it himself. It caught my eye when I was scrolling.

@Jeanniemaries I like this one due to the dark colors. I have another one on the other side of that building which is light blues and they faded badly.

That's very pretty! Since it says "welcome" I wonder why they call it a hex sign? I always thought a hex was something evil but there's nothing evil about a welcome sign!

Maybe someday you will be able to say that is a hex that I am putting on you. But do you really want to say that to some one.
