If you found $100 in a parking lot, how would you react?

Let's say you are in Walmart's parking lot (substitute any store you like!) getting ready to go shopping and out of the corner of your eye you spot money on the ground. You pick it up and are shocked that it is a $100 bill. You look around to see if anyone is watching. You could really use that money for groceries or necessities. But then you think, gee, maybe the person who lost it really needs it too. There are lot of folks in the parking lot, maybe one of them lost it.....It's in your hands and so is the decision! Now, what do you with with that money? Photo from Pixabay

I actually did find money outside the gas station one time and I turned it into the cashier in case somebody when in looking for it. The cashier may have pocketed himself after I left who knows but I just didn't feel right keeping it.

I think donating it I would be sure it would be used properly...or put it in the collection plate at church.

I never found $100 bucks so... mmm.. =) But the rightful thing to do is see if someone is really looking for their money and if not - who do we give it to? Of course everyones going claim its theirs especially at Walmart. Mind as well keep it. Can't really identify what the bill looks like.

@AbbyGreenhill Same if someone asked me ~ and I know I did not lose it, I would not claim it. But I am sure many would though if it was $100 bucks. If it was a couple bucks probably not.

I'd go to customer services and tell them I'd found some money in the carpark and leave my number but I'd take the money with me I found a 5 pound note a couple of months ago on the pavement and I kept it

@AbbyGreenhill I wouldn't tell them how much money so if anyone reported lost money they'd have to tell the amount before I gave it back I might even say some notes rather than one note that'd be even better

It is better to ask people around without saying how much the money was if they lost it. And if no one is fine then take it. 100 is a lot in my book haha better keep that thing sealed up tight.

For us here, $100 is so much. My thoughts said, find those keepers. Lol And my other thoughts said, what if the owner of that money needs it badly. Hmmm. Clueless of what to do. But if you are a good person, you'll know what to do.

It would be futile to hand it in because the real owner will not be found.

If I could not find the owner by seeing who was looking--if you asked, everyone would say yes, they lost it!--I would tell Walmart what I found and leave my number with them. The person might call and inquire if anyone lost the money then they would have my number. I would not spend it. If no one claimed it I would give it to charity. I did find $270 in a used book once and tried my best to track down the owner but no luck. I gave it to my DIL for her dog's vet bills.

I have never found a huge amount - $20 and there were no other cars in the parking lot but ours. At that point in time we needed it, so I kept it.....things are far different now, I would donate it to animal rescue.

I am horribly guilty but if I found it I would pick it up. And probably spend it at the Walmart.

If I would ask many would say "it's mine", the best it would be to donate the money, at least you do a good action.

I would be observing in the parking lot of who might have lost the money. I would not give it to the customer service as I wouldn't be sure if the money will be given to the right owner. So I will keep it and give this to anybody who might need it.

It would be hard to find the true owner, so instead of handing it over to the wrong person I would hold onto it . However, I would buy a meal for at least three homeless persons out of it.

Well, to be honest, I think if you went round asking everybody if they'd dropped a $100 bill, you can guarantee more than one of them would say that yes, they did drop it. I'd pick it up and look around at people to see if any of them were holding a wallet or looked like they'd just been pulling things out of their pockets or looking around at the floor looking for something they had dropped. If nobody was doing any of these things, I'd most likely keep it. After all, where else would I hand it into? The shop? The cashier would likely keep it for themselves. The police? Nobody is going to go to the police about losing $100.

There are many variables to the finding of money that most of us would react in one of several ways.

There is no way if you are in a WalMart parking lot that you would know who dropped it. If it was by itself and no papers with it if you turn it in, you know it will only be kept by that person. So I would be Thanking and Praising god for that find and use it on groceries probably.

If I saw an old person crying it might give a hint that is the person who lost is, but otherwise, not really a way to tell for sure.

Although USD100 is attractive, but I will not feel comfortable to take it with me because it doesn't belong to me. It is not worth to feel so bad all the time for such kind of money. I will return it to the police and I don't care what will happen at last. This thing did happen to me before. One case is the money and the other case is a cellphone. I returned it to the losers.

I would probably turn it into the store. Too many people standing around in the parking lot. Anyone of them could falsely claim the money.

I would hand it to the management in case someone's been looking for it. It's not mine to keep. I don't know whether the management would do their job or keep for themselves, it's up for them after that.

If there is only one store (not a mall with dozens of stores) I think I would ask at the service desk of anyone had reported losing some cash. I wouldn't rush out to spend it, but hang onto it for a day or two to see if the owners came forward. I've actually found a $20. In the parking lot. I donated it to the food bank.

Just being realistic. I don't know too many people who would honestly say no I didn't lose any money. But I probably would go ask a manager if anyone had come around looking for lost money. If they say no I would probably keep it. I have lost money inside a local stop and shop. I was in tears asking if anyone saw it. Nothing. No one spoke up. I think it happens. We lose things and we are all just human.
