A performer takes a song by another performer and revamps it to create a "cover version". Sometimes this can be for a specific purpose, for example: in a film or musical, where the second performer is giving their rendition of the song. In such cases, this is all above-board, with the permission of the original performer, or of their estate. I stumbled across such a song this morning, one that was taken from the original French, translated into English, and sung as part of a remake of a film - so many iterations involved! It is worth the watching, and as it is not a recent film, should be available cheaply to buy or "rent" (if you are an Amazon or Netflix subscriber, for example.).
