How I Spent My Easter Sunday

Yesterday, we went to the local Renaissance Faire. We’ve been going just about every year since I met my husband. In years past, we’ve gone with a group of friends, but this year, it was just the two of us. We caught the usual comedy acts and a joust. I like the crafts, that is, people who can replicate or approximate metalworking, woodworking, or cloth making of centuries past.
Seeing the costumes is fun as well. I saw one young girl dressed as a hippie from the 60s in striped bellbottoms and wearing a headband. Hmph. Does she need a history lesson.
The picture I was most proud of (not included here) was of the parade of the queen. We were waiting for one show when the parade came by. Across from us were the bathrooms. I figure it would be impossible to take pictures of the parade without getting a big sign saying “PRIVY” in the in the frame. By sheer luck, I snapped a pic just as the queen happened to be in front of the sign. I actually got most of her face in the light, too.
The picture I’ve included comes from a demonstration of different birds of prey. I don’t remember this particular demonstration being part of the show. The first bird was a kookaburra. Goofy looking bird, but the handler got him him to call, just like in the old Tarzan movies. The second bird was a Harris hawk, which flew several times through the audience. Most of my pictures of him were of an empty perch. I was so happy to see this one.
The last bird was a huge owl. She looked like she’d rather be napping. I don’t recall the specific breed, but he said it was the largest known owl. Beautiful bird.
It was one of the most interesting demonstrations I’ve seen for a while. I couldn’t tell with any certainty, but the birds seemed well kept and well treated, their plumage full and clean.
Image is my own. Yeah, I really took this. I really got a pic with the bird in the frame.

I'd heard this. I've never seen it done, but then I've never been in a position to see it done. I guess in the back of my mind is always the fear the animals in travelling exhibits are in danger of mistreatment. These seemed to be healthy.

Was Puke and Snot there? Just wondering if it's the same one that comes through here.

@msiduri - They're a comedy act. Very popular at the one here.

Yes, he was tethered. I think the mild climate in California lends itself to the import of a lot of exotic animals. But every time I see someone walking a husky—granted, a beautiful dog—I have to wonder if the if this is the right place for the beastie.

Was there a Punch and Judy show? Or that act doesn't date that far back?

I haven't seen any Punch and Judy shows, but these would work well, I think. Accord to the encyclopedia of all knowledge, they have roots in 16th Italian comedy, but as such were probably in puppet form in Restoration England. Didn't quite make it back to Elizabethan times, but I don't think it's that strictly enforced.

People count, too, but animals who can't speak for themselves always make me think twice.
I mean, other than in the usual ways.
