As soon as the Governor of Tennessee signs off on the bill the new gas tax will be a done deal. This is the first increase in many years.
The 6 cents per gallon tax increase will be as follows:
This year in July - tax will increase by 4 cents
2018 July - tax goes up 1 cent
2019 July - tax goes up 1 cent
So for the first year, based on a 20 gallon tank, the increase would add .80 to the total bill. When you look at it that way it's easier to swallow.
What will also happen is that the state is going to lower the sales tax on food by 20%. We pay 10% on any and all food. That will change the tax to 8%.
For us the benefit is positive since we spend more money on food than we do gas, we will be saving money. Not a lot but every little bit helps.

We pay almost so much tax on our gasoline....then even the taxes are taxed at the pump. Two weeks ago we had a sudden price increase of almost $.20 a litre. That works out to about $.75 per gallon.

We are a lot closer to the oil source living in the south and our gas prices are usually lower than most states. your increase was high.

@Fleura As of yesterday gas here is $2.15 a gallon. It has gone up, it was right below 2 bucks for a long time. We know you pay more. And when you are used to paying less a few pennies more can make a difference - this is a poor area and most of the locals probably will feel the extra 6 cents more than you could realize.

@AbbyGreenhill @morleyhunt I must admit it sounds funny to us in the UK, making such a fuss over such a tiny amount. After converting pounds to dollars and litres to US gallons (which are not the same as UK gallons either!) petrol here currently costs $5.82 per gallon. So, close to 8 times as much. Of course distances are about 5 times smaller so we don't need to use as much, so that helps.

That is good news about the food tax. Here in the UK, all of our taxes only ever go up! And there are always talks about adding more to certain foods or taxing foods that aren't already taxed. I'm sure they'd tax the air if they could.

You can't hold air in your hands so they can't tax it LOL! I don't know why they didn't just take the grocery tax money and turn it over to the budget for roads.

@AbbyGreenhill I am full of admiration for them; we can hardly get through a week without running out of something and it would be so much more difficult if you could only get to a store a couple of times a year, even if money wasn't a problem.

@AbbyGreenhill Yes, it makes you think how the pioneers managed doesn't it? They were much better at stocking up and planning ahead!

@AbbyGreenhill so you would be spending 6 cents more on gas right?

@AbbyGreenhill I am relaying facts also, we pay taxes on our fuel and then at the pumps we pay an additional tax, the total of which is around 14.3-14.8% which I am sure is a lot higher then you are paying.
But what does complaining do about it?

Never could understand there being a tax on foods or what some call 'luxury' items, such and paper products.
We have all heard the joke about how the air we breathe will be taxed soon. Maybe.

well something I do not worry about.Gas care less. They talk about pain at the pump.
I do not feel any pain.Just pump away.I am going to run all over the place to save a few pennies.
Food prices here are not bad.Once we get into Summer we have the Farmer's market soon.
We have to pay taxes. This is life.If you feel that your getting screwed tell it to the judge(kidding)

Our gas is cheap compared to up north. But I like that we will be paying less at the grocery store. We do't have farmer's markets near us and those we do go to cost twice as much as products from the grocery store. Sure, they are better, but you pay for that.

I'm not sure but I think that in Illinois the tax is around 7% for everything you buy. Currently our gas is at $2.31 a gallon.

There is the tax the state says we have and then each of our 92 counties can add a tax - and they do. Gas yesterday was 2.15.

@AbbyGreenhill Yea we have that too. The last election they asked for a rise in the taxes in our county and once again the people said no. It would amount to and extra 25 cents per 100 dollars spent. I voted yes because the police and fire need more money and that's what it would have gone to but it was voted down for the 3rd time.
