We are at #7 in my Favorite "( )" Songs series, which is songs with parentheses in the title. My only rule is that the parentheses must contain actual lyrics, not (Version,) or (Part 1,) or anything like that. @FourWalls is doing both a country and a rock version of this, so be sure to check hers out as well. The 7th spot belongs to "(Sittin' On) The Dock of the Bay by the legendary Otis Redding. Otis Redding's career lasted from 1958 until his death, at the age of 26, in a 1967 plane crash. He is in the Rock and Roll, Songwriters, Georgia Music, and Official Rhythm & Blues Music Halls of Fame, and a statue of Redding sits in his hometown of Macon, Georgia. Redding influenced a plethora of musical acts, including Marvin Gaye, Al Green, Aretha Franklin, Led Zeppelin, The Grateful Dead, Lynyrd Skynyrd, and The Doors, among others. Co-written with Steve Cropper, "(Sittin' On) The Dock of the Bay" is from Redding's 1968 album The Dock of the Bay. The song was the first posthumous tune to reach #1 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart, and was Top 10 in the UK, Canada, and New Zealand. Redding recorded the song twice, the second just days prior to his death. And that whistling at the end? Redding wanted to ad-lib the end, but forgot and started whistling, which was re-recorded by Redding's band leader, Sam "Bluzman" Taylor. The double Grammy-winning song has been covered numerous times, notably by Sammy Hagar, Michael Bolton, Glen Campbell, Cher, Bob Dylan, Percy Sledge, Sam & Dave, Waylon Jennings and Willie Nelson, and T. Rex. And that's just the big names. What can I say? "(Sittin' On) The Dock of the Bay)" is a bona fide classic, the only true classic in this countdown. How can anyone not dig this? There's nothing more to add. None of the covers close to the original.
