Do women live longer than men? Why?

Research studies indicate that women all over the world outlive men- - -even in some of the poorest countries. Why is it so? There could be several reasons for this amazing phenomenon. Primarily it could stem from women’s biological, physiological and psychological make-up. Since times immemorial, women have been noted for their strength of endurance and tolerance. Have you not come across, many outstanding women who have risen above men in times of family and community crisis? Perhaps, it is this “inner” strength which makes women distinctive while adding to their longevity factor. Or is it specifically their genes? What do you think?

@hostessman That sure is a funny reason. But perhaps it may be true to a certain degree.

I don't really know what it is but certainly women often have very strong characters.

@Gabugs Yes, I do but when the chips are down, many women might still be crying but they will just get on with whatever needs to be done.

Are you saying this from your personal experiences? Frankly, I would not say that in general, women are emotionally stronger than men.

@JudyEv Perhaps! What I meant emotionally for instance, we women tend to cry more easily. To be frank, I even cry while watching a sad movie. I simply cannot help it. Don't you Judy?

It is written in the genes. Also, I think that men let their medical issues go and are less apt to take care of their health. I think also that women are care givers in nature and this gives them a feeling of accomplishment and so they feel good about themselves. Where men feel responsible and work at trying and unfulfilling jobs a lot of the time. Physiologically men are usually stronger and put more stress and strain on their bodies.

You are absolutely right on this. However, they could alter their circumstances and not give up on their quest to live longer- - - especially for their family's sake.

men tend to work abusive jobs that wear them out physically. leading to shorter life spans.

@Gabugs - jobs where one is constantly carrying heaving loads on their shoulders, on their feet all the time, working in harsh environments will shorten ones life span.

@Plethos That's sadly true. At times, its the life's environment and circumstances that can be modified, but not changed.

@Plethos That's indeed sad. However, I would say not all or majority of men would have "abusive" jobs. Hopefully, men could eliminate the risks they tend to take upon themselves.

Yes generally women live far longer then men, very few men in my family have gotten past late 70's, but women often make it to 90's

@chrissbergstrom Its up to each man to avoid making this phenomenon a rule. In my next discussion, I'll try to tackle this problem. Most important: Think Positive!

I think women, in general, are more concerned about health.
