It Was Fun Watching My Mom with her Newest Great-Grandchild

Some of you have heard me talk about my mom here. She's had dementia for several years now. At first she lived in her house and did fine. Along with the dementia she is also legally blind. She has peripheral vision but cannot look at anything directly. Through the years as her vision got worse then her memory took a dive as well.
She decided when she turned eighty that she didn't want to live to see ninety, and I think that is a big reason why she got dementia when she did as it wasn't long after. I think she lived with the beginning disease in her own home for several years. It wasn't until she fell outside when walking with a friend, and once she missed the last step heading down to the basement. After that when there was an opening where we had her name at the senior housing we moved her there. She was there three years.
Prior to last June she needed more help than the senior housing's supportive nursing staff could give her for what their certification allowed there, I think. So we had to find her a new home. We did. Mid-June we moved her to a new group home that just opened and she's been there ever since.
Last fall she was taken off a couple of her dementia meds. One was for when you live alone and at the new location she was always around people. Prior to that we could understand when she talked with us although she had no idea who we were. Now, she doesn't make any sense or not much, but out of the blue she will say our names when we're in the room. Sometimes when she's stringing what sounds like it should be sentences together she'll stop and she knows a word or several aren't correct, but she can't think of the correct word for what she's thinking.
Anyway, after that introduction, on Easter she really got into talking with the baby in the picture here. The baby is six months old and my mom said every word correctly and in the right order. She was talking like you'd talk to a baby, but I was quite impressed and blessed to be a part of that. She even remembered the noises she used to make with her mouth when babies were around.

We thought she took a turn for the worse but now she's finally back to her old self. At least to how she was before going into the hospital around January.

Dementia is terrible but those lucid moments are such a blessing. Such a sweet picture

I visit with her every Thursday and today she was napping a bit and then sat up and said a few things along with my name. Maybe she just gets lucky since I was the first one, lol. I'll tell her she can remember my name the best because she's known me the longest.

@MarshaMusselman It's sad when those we love have this kind of problems, but at least you know that she is happy where she is now.

Exactly. Actually last week two times while visiting with her at the group home she made a couple of comments about being happy although the rest of her speech wasn't understood. I thought it was cool that she felt happy there. She makes everyone laugh and everyone loves here especially the workers.
When she gets worse for periods of time with her ability to walk and get around and such the staff get concerned because they miss their 'Elly'. Her name is Eleanor.

@LadyDuck We know it's the best place for her now, but it's nice she's happy there whether she really understands everything or not.

@MarshaMusselman Well, now that you mention it, the baby really IS a sweet potato!
Oh that telephone game used to be so funny! It never did quite end up the way it began! And I still love the photo!

It was great seeing and hearing her interact with the baby, but I wouldn't necessarily call it progress as her speech has been worse since fall. Maybe because when we talk to babies we use very simple words, that was easier for her to remember or roll off her tongue.
Are you back now, or just stopping in for a visit around the site?

She got, Allie, the baby to smile quite a bit. I asked my sister, which is the baby's grandma to take some pictures for me. It's too bad she didn't get a video or two. I didn't take my camera or I would have done it. Maybe for Mother's Day I can remember my camera and make sure the battery is good for a video if my mom is doing it again.
