It Wasn't My UFO!

Two years ago my daughter and I went to Oregon for a quilting retreat. We had a great time, wonderful weather, a lot of laughs and a grat dal of sewing. My daughter pieced her first full sized quilt. When we returned home the two of us had the quilt fronts sandwiched quickly and then her's just lay there. My Oregon quilt was finished almost two years ago, but hers was about a third quilt and just waiting and waiting. A few weeks ago, I asked her if I could finish it for her and borrow her quilt frame (mine is broken). After thinking about it for a week or so, she said yes please. Two weeks of intense...finger pricking.....eye straining.....hand quilting, the quilting was finished. The binding was applied and now I only need to label it before returning her quilt. One more UFO finished.....but it wasn't my UFO. Now I have one of my own UFOS on the quilt frame.

You are so kind to finish your daughters. I experienced quilting years ago but I did small ones, pillows, wall hanging, and enjoyed it for a while. I also played with yarn for a while but nothing stuck...except the paint and brush.

I did have an ulterior motive. I wanted to use her quilt frame...mine is broken. Her's also takes up a lot less room.

I do admire hand made quilts but can't imagine myself ever making or using such a thing.

@MALUSE I'm having a little laugh at this. People come to our house and see all the rugs we have from around the wall and say things like "Rugs! On the floor! How unusual". That's what they are for just like quilts are for putting on bed.

This quilt will reside on my daughters sofa, so she can wrap herself in it when she watches television.

A few minutes each day and you'd be surprised how quickly you can make a quilt. I do a lot of the work while watching/listening to audio books and television shows.

I truly admire your quilting skills and patience. Although my wife used to be quite talented at sewing I doubt she would endeavour to make one of these.

It's more time consuming than difficult, if I look at the total time spent on a quilt it can be overwhelming, but think of it as 15 minutes at a time.....time I'm sitting and doing nothing.....it's not that bad.

Love this! I have hand pieced 3 tops, years ago, nothing fancy just the squares, and I need to quilt them, by hand also but I do not have frames, is it possible to do it with a hoop?

I have done a lot of quilting using just a hoop. Several of the quilts I have waiting to be quilted are quite large. They are easier to manage on a frame. The frame I'm using now is very portable and lightweight. It is made with PVC pipes...Joanne Fabrics had them on sale last week for $50.00. If I hadn't already borrowed one, I probably would have purchased it.

That was really nice of you. The choice of colours is pretty, I like that. My Gramma used to have a quilting frame, and I remember how much she'd love to loan out her frames. She claimed that she didn't have the room to set it up, but I always thought that she just liked to get out to quilting parties at other's homes. Regardlessly, I remember her complaining about her fingers being pricked the first few times out, after that she'd claim that she had toughened up her finger tips and was less likely to be pricked.

@Morleyhunt LOL, that is true, but I'm sure that it was a labour of love preparing for Sandra's arrival. And I imagine that its like anything, the first time out in the garden your hands are pretty soft, but after a while of holding a shovel or a hoe, your skin gets tough. I do remember my Gramma talking about the blood that she'd lose over a little prick on the quilt-side.

Once you have a quilting routine...the finger tips get pretty callused and you can quilt for much longer periods of time. The only time it was a real issue was when I was trying to finish a quilt for Sandra when she first came home. Most babies give you about nine months warning. This one was ten days.

I delivers it to her at work this afternoon. All the women at the library loved it. I'm glad that it is finished. Now my plan is to finish quilting one of my UFOs. It's on the frame ready to start.

My favourite colours. The quilt I made at the same retreat had similar colours. The difference is mine has been finished for two years.

I usually let my children finish their own craft projects.i wanted to borrow her quilt frame. This was the quickest way to get her quilt finished and off the frame.
