Top Loading is Not Adventurous Thing to Do: Would You Agree?

In some isolated places in the Philippines, there is a scarcity of public transportation. It takes a lot of courage and experiences a dangerous adventure riding on the top load of a jeepney. I am sure it is a bizarre thing to do. But the local people don’t have the choice to travel while on the top load. When I was still so active working in the field under the umbrella of the local government, I had tried traveling while on jeepney's top load. At first, I was so hesitant to do it. Eventually, I enjoyed it. It is an open air travel to view the scenery in the mountainside of Tinglayan, Kalinga Philippines. “Would you try it?” “Can you take the risk?” Image Credit: Shavkat

I think it is risky but if I had no other options yes I would do it. Except I would jump off if there was a high bend going around steep moutainouse roads so scary for me

It's fun, I did it several times, I was always thinking it was safer to be on top or on the hood ( one I rode had people on the hood and the driver could hardly see), yeah its safer there cause it's easier to bail out or eject if something goes wrong

@louievill haha Louie..it would be fun indeed and a great view. Hey listen, I know what you mean because I had jumped off an old motorbike with the sidecar before to save myself and the driver went down into the hole but not me haha I was only 17 but quick and nimble lol

I had tried doing that in the Province of Antique, Philippines travelling to Malay Aklan,( going to Boracay) OMG, it was like a 9 hour travel and the people were jammed pack, you can hardly move a leg if you are insidethere were people on the hood, on top of the jeep, plus sacks of rice and live chickens, passing dangerous one way mountain passes

I will join you with the feeling of excitement with thinking of the danger that might happen. During that time, I always take it as an adventure. But I haven't tried 9 hours travel on a top load. That's really tiring with the hot weather while on travel.lol

I would prefer to be inside the jeepney but if I ha no choice then I would do it. But I would try to avoid it if possible as an accident can happen suddenly.

It is most likely that we can't be a passenger inside the jeepney. When I was traveling back to the working site, the bus from the city is always late to arrive in Bontoc. The jeepney going to Tinglayan, Kalinga is so full-packed of passengers. Top load as it is when traveling that time.

@1hopefulman I did, my friend. It is a history now. I did the best I could to help the tribes during that time. I had witnessed a lot of challenges that includes tribal war.

It was enjoyable to travel with my colleagues and we kept on laughing while riding on the top load. It wasn't bad since we chat all the way back to the main road of our working place in the field.

@Nawsheen It wasn't worth it working with the government agency. I had just thought of the extending the help to the community during that time.

If I could find a nice space and a safe one on the top there I would go all depending where they go though and as long as its not too high up.

An adrenaline rush of trying it. At first, I was so hesitant. A female colleague was laughing at me that time. She said, we can try it and it is an adventure thing to be.

It also happens here in far away countrysides. Since nobody will check it and give it a punishment because it is dangerous.

I agree. I can't bear the heat of the sun while on the top load of the jeepney. At some point, I had tried to have a great experience. The adventure is really a risky thing to do. Image Credit: Shavkat

@sjvg1976 We can also include the poor condition of the road. I also tried to ride on the top load of a bus. It was quite scary.

I agree. Well, the greenery views can be seen because it is the mountainside of the Philippines. But, I am a bit worried about the road condition. It was like traveling by a bumpy road.

For men it's ok. But for women? NO WAY! as long as the jeepney condition is ok and the driver drives smoothly, no problem. I haven't heard any accidents at my hometown because of it.

I can't agree more. However, we can't resist the risk because it is the only way to travel back to the working place. I guess I am lucky that nothing happened during the period of working there.
