Has anyone here ever had a root canal?

Would you care to share your experience? I think I need to have a root canal. How long does it hurt? Do you need meds to take away the pain? How many times do you have to go back until it is done? How long is each appointment?

Yes. About a 2-hour appointment, under local anaesthetic, you are awake throughout. Then back to your own dentist for a proper filling or crown, which takes 2 appointments (a back tooth, in my case). Worth every penny, as you keep your original tooth. The sorest bit was the jaw hinge, near your ears, after a 2hr stint with your mouth held open. Otherwise bearable.

A two hour appointment, but you only went one time instead of two, right?

I'd agree with you. It wasn't much of an ordeal at all although every thing you hear about it seems to suggest it is.

@MsBooklover. One time for x-ray and assessment, one long session for the treatment. Then one at the dentist for a permanent filling on the treated tooth. And many years later, 2 visits to my own dentist for the crown work on that tooth.

I've had many. It takes about an hour and two visits of one hour are necessary. Yes, with anaesthetics it does not hurt while under but it is uncomfortable and there can be considerable pain after. I never take medications for the pain and so I have to endure the pain for about two days..

@MsBooklover I may not fall asleep right away but eventually I do. If you can take a painkiller with no problem then take one. I am allergic to painkillers and so I have no choice but to suffer for a couple of days.

Wow! You are the master of root canals. Does it hurt so much you cannot sleep. Or does it wear off?

Most of the people covered the procedure so I'll just talk about the pain since you centered a lot of your questions there. You will not have any pain during the procedure because of the anesthetic. You will be uncomfortable because they usually put a rubber object over your mouth to focus on the area and possibly keep pieces of teeth from flying? But the discomfort is minimal. A few hours after the procedure you will have pain, depending on the severity of your root canal how much will vary. Usually a couple of Advil every 4 hours will keep pain to a minimum. When you sleep a good tip is to elevate your head so you reduce swelling in the area where the surgery was performed. The next day you will be fine. The dental visits are a breeze. No pain.

It did not end up being a root canal, but this is excellent advice.

I can't remember much about it really but it wasn't an ordeal at all - which is probably why I can't remember much.

Each appointment takes about an hour but you need to keep going for at least 10 sittings. for me , it was like that. It didn't hurt as they injected something to make the area numb
