Well water

We are forever grateful to our well that we sunk the first thing after we bought the property. We had to go just about 30 feet deep and the water struck. Ours is the only well here where water is available at such a shallow level.
It is summer now and the water level has gone down. It does not dry but we have to be alert so that we do not overdraw. We have a tank installed high above and water gets pumped up there.
Where do you get your water from. Do you have water shortage in your area?

It's great you have your own well @allknowing ! We get ours from our water works. And last year we almost ran out of water, thankfully this year we got a lot of rain, but there were still water restrictions because we have a lot of people using the same source.

We also have that facility but we have not applied for a connection. We are happy with our well

That water from off the roof I assume is collected only in the rains? What about water supply provided by the city authorities?

@allknowing Because we live out in the country we are responsible for our own water supplies. Our tank holds 100,000 litres and fills every winter and lasts us all year.

That is pretty cool and smart that you guys did that. Here in California they drill for it like oil because that is what it essentially is for bottle water companies. It is quite sicking really During the drought made everyone cut back, but not those guys.

I have heard of severe drought you guys go through. Even in India in certain parts the situation is very bad.

We never have shortage of water. As Delhi is situated near the bank of river Yamuna so the water level is not gone down.
It amazing as these days we don't find wells even in the villages and if even we have them we don't find water in them.

Not all parts of India have water. But do you get clean water. We hear of so many illnesses in Delhi.
Where we live there is no pollution. Our well water is clean.

If I owned a property I would rather strike water than strike oil.

We are fortunate to have good city water available. Many who live in rural areas depend on wells though. This year they have plenty of water after a few years of severe drought.

That facility is also available but we have not opted for it as we have enough and pure water. Here they add chlorine to purify that water.

Some water has natural minerals. When we were travelling from Jammu to Srinagar by bus we had to pass through mountains and I remember drinking water that came flowing down the mountains. The driver told us it was packed with minerals

oh, that is a big well. the wells here in my place are just a smaller one, about bigger than the circumference of the wheel of a car.

@ridingbet If there is a pulley and stuff then it cannot be a bore well as bore well water is normally pumped up. It must be an open well and here all wells are as big or even bigger than ours. Although there is a pulley for our well we too pump up our water.

@allknowing i don't know how these are called. we just term them as deep wells. the one like in the illustration of the poem Jack and Jill, with a pail and pulley mounted on a wood, above the well.

Everyone here has piped mains water, that ultimately comes from a reservoir a few miles away. Pretty much everyone in the UK has been connected to the mains supply for at least the last 50-odd years. Some houses still have wells though - our last house still had a well in the garden that was last used in the drought of 1976. But most villages just had one well to serve the whole village, rather tan individual ones.

More and more wells are getting contaminated with the drainage system that runs along. We are spared so far.
