Holy cow, are parents really that lazy these days?

I just had to ask. I was born in 1949. Dad worked while mom raised us. It wasn't a perfect arrangement because mom didn't have those magazines to read on how to raise her kids so she did what she thought was right. No, I didn't learn a lot of the basics like cooking, sewing or cleaning ..... mom thought she was supposed to wait until I was older to start teaching me those things but as a tween I could've cared less, I was too busy having fun so mom gave up. Personally, I think every potential parent should take classes on how to raise their kids before pregnancy so they don't overburden the taxpayers with teaching things kids should learn at home. Our tax dollars pay for that "free" education everyone is so happy with then they complain because their kids aren't learning the basics???? WTH. That image is a screenshot of what I saw on facebook. Did you see anything like it this morning?

Heck, I can teach them all of that and make a fortune in the process! I'll just put all those lessons in a video game! I'm far more worried about kids not learning 1+1=2. I used to grade school assessment tests, and some states mandated that a person who got the wrong answer got a higher score than someone with a correct answer because the correct answer didn't show the work.

Now that's a great idea. Why burden taxpayers with teaching the basics when you can sell their parents these videos to teach them. Although the correct answer is the idea, it's also how you arrived at that correct answer. What I don't get is why a teacher would give a better grade for the wrong answer.

I was really fond of my home economics classes during elementary and high school. I learned a lot of things and I don't need to ask too many question from my parents how to do the basic stuff.

How about brushing your teeth? Did a teacher teach you how? What about tying your shoe laces, did the teacher also teach you that?

Some teachers will do that but it should not be an expectation by the parents as a teacher is not responsible for raising other peoples children @diosabella

@rebelann I learned to tie my own shoe laces and how to brush my own teeth. But in school the teacher encouraged the student to be neat and clean.

We helped mother manage her household and learnt how to cut, sweep, clean and wash. The real housekeeping was only after I got married.

Who taught you how to brush your teeth, comb your hair, tie your shoes and wash your hands and face?

Thanks to LBJ and the Great Society, we've had decades of the government reassuring parents that the state will raise their kids so the parents don't have to.

And look where that got us. I don't envy you one bit, being a teacher in this day and age has to have some risks now and then. How do you handle the bullies? Growing up our teachers always had the right to discipline.

Almost sounds like the way they used to rotate bullies from school to school in the mid 1960s @DWDavis

@rebelann Bullies these days are talked to a lot by the counselor and administration. If they don't change their ways they can be put in In School Suspension. If that doesn't work, they can be suspended out of school. If that still doesn't work, they can be sent to the alternative school.

I didn't see it but I think it's a good idea. Many kids aren't taught these things at home as you point out. Everyone needs at least a smattering of knowledge.

That's true but shouldn't parents teach their little children how to brush their teeth or tie their shoes?

Babies aren't born knowing how to brush teeth or tie shoes @RubyHawk they have to be taught by their parents.

Most parents of 21st century are both working or busy building their careers hence the burden to teach these basics is left to teachers or nannies

It's a parents job to raise their kids not the schools. Teachers should only be responsible for teaching reading, writing and arithmetic.

It's easier to learn when you are young @BabyRai1 maybe the new generation of parents will know to teach their children when they are very young.

I was fortunate that I learned to cook knee-hi to a grasshopper. I was helping make biscuits when I was a toddler. My aunt Becky spilled the beans to Keith during one of her visits here. She raved on and on about my biscuit making abilities. Note, Keith was shocked and upset because he always asks me to make them and I never get around to it. I learned to garden, sew and knit a bit as well while I was growing up. We lived in the country and it was how my parents were raised as well. Now after saying that, I can see where divorced or single parents might have a hard time getting the basics in when they are doing it all on their own. I did teach the boys how to clean, wash their own clothes and cook. Other basics that I hear people concerned about is balancing a checkbook, using coupons, and other things that are not covered at school.

The things your folks taught you as a toddler are what I consider the basics, but balancing checkbooks should be covered in a Math class. I've never used coupons so I can't comment on that. Perhaps my idea of basics isn't the same as other peoples, I always thought mom's were supposed to teach their little ones to brush their teeth and hair, wash their face and hands and tie their shoes, I just don't see that a teacher should be tasked to do that. As for changing the oil in a car or changing a tire those 2 should be covered in a mechanical shop class which I would hope more girls start to take. Back in my day if a girl took shop she was considered weird.

I agree basics should be taught in childhood, some people don't even have knowledge about how to raise kids, .

It's so sad, isn't it? I can't recall any of my teachers being responsible for teaching us the basics outside of the usual reading, writing and arithmetic.

WE were raised by our 2 parents, Dad building houses and Mom staying home. They did a wonderful job with us. WE all turned out good and honest citizens. We are proud of our parents for doing such a great job and told them when they were still with us.

That sounds like my family, mom was a homemaker while dad was a soldier. She did the best she could and we made out alright all things considered.

I've not seen this before now. I agree that parents are expecting others to do their job too much these days.

I think the generation that had the kids in HS were too busy playing video games and never learned basic parenting when they started their families. Maybe todays kids will grow up to be better parents. Already I can see some of the young families here have started taking turns working so that one of them is with their kids. I think that's commendable but I can see where that kills any ideas about having a good career but if you have kids its a sacrifice that should be considered.

We taught our kids everything a parent should teach them. As a teacher, I had a student come to me with an IEP, Individual Education Plan. I was to teach him how to brush his teeth in fifth grade! I had the nurse do it. I was too busying teaching. I'm so happy I'm retired!!!!!

OMG that's totally ridiculous. The whole idea behind having babies is to actually raise them not get a teacher to do it for you.
