A Mountain Lion Cub Survived

A few months ago, I wrote a post about P-39, the mother mountain lion which was hit by a car on the outskirts of Los Angeles. She left behind three mountain lion cubs which were only 12 weeks old. They had been tagged by rangers shortly after their birth and were named P50, P51, and P52. Shortly after the death of their mother, P51 and P52 were also found dead. They, too, were hit by cars. Experts were worried about the remaining cub, P50, and didn't know how it was doing. There were no sitings of it for several months. Today, they found P50, but he was living too close to humans and near an area which experts believed could be dangerous for him. He was actually hanging out around a plant nursery. They believe he was looking for water. They tranquilized him and moved him to a safer area ... the Santa Susanna Mountains. The experts said that P50 appeared to be in good health and had been living off small animals he had caught. They now believe he will be able to survive on his own. I thought I would share the good news with the other people here!

I hope not to come across P50, but I'm glad he's doing well.

@msiduri - I hope I don't run into him on a nature walk, either. However, I hate to see any type of animal go extinct, even predators.

@DeborahDiane Same here. I hate to see mountain lions prey on domestic animals, too. But if I can believe what I read, their greatest enemy is cars. And they are shy by nature. A friend of my worked for years at JPL in Pasadena where they have herds of deer on the campus. A employee hit one with a car one day. He wasn't hurt, but the deer was struggling. Several people stood around wondering what to do when a mountain lion they had no idea was anywhere around came along and hauled the deer off.

@msiduri - That is almost funny that the mountain lion was better equipped to deal with the injured deer than all the geniuses at JPL. (LOL) We only have a few dozen mountain lions in all of Southern California, and they do provide a necessary function ... as long as they avoid humans.

It is a pity they did not place them farther from humans as soon as they saw them the first time.

@marguicha For the most part, we leave our mountain lions alone in Southern California. There are only a few dozen. However, in the case of P-50, I am glad the experts did intervene.

@Hatley Yes, that is happening all over Southern California. The mountain lions are looking for food. We need to find a way to share this area better. I'm glad they moved the cub.

@jstory07 - I told everyone I would let them know if they found any of the cubs. I thought we would all be cheered by the good news.

I am glad to know that the cub is alive and healthy. Let's hope he can live by himself now.

@Hannihar - Yes, I hope he continues to survive. He has had a rough start in life! They have cameras in our woods and they watch for photos of different animals, so they keep track of them as best they can. Sometimes, they get amazing photos!

@DeborahDiane So, will they step in if they see a lion eating a poacher again?

@Hannihar - Usually, they don't see the photos of the mountain lions until long after an event happens. They are still photos taken with cameras that are motion activated. If we had live video, I am sure they they would step in!

@DianneN - I was happy to hear they found and relocated the last cub, too. Since he has been surviving on his own, the experts believe he should do just fine now in the mountains where he has been relocated. Great news!
