When I was young, you either lived in your parent´s house, by your own or got married. So that you probablt were dating someone and havingg a boyfriend or a girlfriend was part of the dating relation.
When you were more involved, you started to think about getting married.
All this has changed a lot lately and I don´t know how to call the relations between 2 grown ups.
My two daughters got married at some point in their early adult life and had some children. Then they got a divorce and more partners came into their lives.
My eldest daughter has what Icould call a "boyfriend?" But he is 60 years old so it sounds funny to say BF. They live each in a separate house. My daughter has a house, he has an apartment. Before him, 16 years ago, Tania had a BF that lived in her house for a couple of years. He is my grandson Diego´s father.
My youngest daughter has lived with Rafael for atound 10 years. They have a daughter (Sofía) plus the older kids from both sides. He calls me mother in law.
Is he my son in law or is he just Claudia´s boy friend?
And what happens if you have a 70 or 80 years old "boy friend"? Isn´t that too old to talk about boys?
Do help me, friends. What do youthink?

Sometimes when two are very close, been together for years and have kid(s) together they will call the other ones parents in laws. And the parents will as well.. but you dont have to. As technically they aren't.
I dont know why anyone young would date a 60 year old though. Thats just wrong. But thats also just my opinion. So cant help you there with what to call them.

@Courtlynn Of course. And I think that age gaps change as you grow older.

My eldest daughter is 53 years old. So dating a 60 year old man is not wrong. BTW, I don´t consider age difference wrong per se. It depends on each couple.

@marguicha thats different then. But in my opinion it is wrong to have a huge age gap. But we can agree to disagree.

@Courtlynn The word marriage stops having a real meaning after a long time. In my country it used to be omportant when the children of legally married parents had more rights than children out of wedlock. That has changed completly so marriage is not important any longer.

@marguicha some people say if you are together for more than like 5 years then you are "married" in a sense. Which you really arent but gives more of a chance for it to happen.

Call them what you like
Some parents do not recognize anyone of their childrens boyfriends, husbands, and so on and will only address them as their name, directly.
My Mother never accepted anyone and did not address them even by name sometimes, very unfriendly lol
and would not speak to them.

I accept them, but I don´t know how to talk about them to other people that don´t know them by their name.

@marguicha Yes, I think you could say my daughter's boyfriend or partner is fine. Or husband whatever they classify as. Most people here say partner if they do not want to use another one.

I have always found Boyfriend to be a funny word, i mean how can a man in there 60s be considered a boyfriend, i like the term partners if they are long term together but not married.

We have the term "pareja" in Spanish (partner) but it only means a woman friend. I agree with you.
