Did Your Heat and Cold Tolerance Change?

Philippines
May 9, 2017 10:53pm CST
A fitness instructor once told me she has become sensitive to cold temperature because she has less fat. I thought it was the opposite, that physically active people feel warmer. A thin young lady who grew up here moved to a cold country. She was not an exerciser or played sports. Everyone there was surprised that she can wear sleeveless tops at home during winter. However, her hands are icy cold. Does your heat and cold tolerance change as you gain or lose weight, as you increase or decrease physical activity? Or has it stayed the same regardless of age, weight and activity?

What I know is that my tolerance to temperature change is different with age.

My weight has not fluctuated that much throughout the years . . . but I've certainly gotten older . But for me, being active does make a difference. I can tolerate heat or cold if my blood has been circulated regularly through exercise. I feel sluggish and less tolerant of anything if I do nothing. As I get older, I am less tolerant of extreme weather . . . but as long as I do not go near the AC or heaters, I can acclimate better to current temperatures whether cold or hot. And being older, I think the hormones are getting to me !

@hereandthere Well, when I exercise regularly, I just feel good period. I feel more lively and energetic - and perhaps that also allows my body to regulate itself better - including weather/temperatures.

i was thin most of my life and never active even when i was working already, yet i've always been a "sweater." i seldom wear sweaters and jackets, but i wouldn't sit near the a/c unit also if there was one! hmm, your observation about activity and circulation is worth experimenting on.

I've found myself less tolerant of extreme heat as I get older. I tend to be calm, so my body surface temperature tends to be warm. That hasn't changed.

I think there are people who can be cold or heat tolerant regardless of body weight.

There can be more to it than weight and fat percentage. For some, it is a hormone thing, a thyroid thing, and other factors too can be an issue.

Well, I do not do heavy exercise, but surely in winter when I clean the house or do something physically I feel less the cold than while I am typing at my computer.

I can't say that I've noticed any difference. I do seem to get hot and cold in bed from time to time.

Less activity means cooler body, more hotter body. 40 to 60 years old = hot flashes

I really don't know But I think that's the reason that now I feel so much cold than before since I have lost tremendous amount of weight and I am thin now

I have always been very sensitive to cold. And it gets worse each year.
