Several years ago when I had a Self-Contained class of 6th, 7th, and 8th graders I came up with an idea to keep the kids involved, busy and out of trouble. This group of kids had a hard time feeling compassion for others so I needed to some up with an idea to help them learn how to. Believe it or not, the simple task of teaching them how to do a single crochet stitch set them on a path of caring and sharing. Once the boys got over the feeling that it was girly stuff I was making them do, they got involved and did a wonderful job. With that single stitch they managed to make quite a few lap robes. Just before Christmas for several years I would take them on a field trip to a nursing center where they would give them out to the patients who needed them. The looks on the patients and the students faces was priceless. They would give them out and then have cookies and punch and talk to the patients. It was a win-win situation for all. It was such a popular project for the kids that I was able to use it to help to learn how to control themselves and their reactions. I used it as a reward for good behavior. They earned a block of time to work on the lap robes. I sure do miss doing this type of thing with the students.

what a beautiful thing you did for both your students and the seniors! I'm sure those kids will remember helping those people for the rest of their lives. And who knows if they will teach something similar to their own children one day!

@HazySue One thing I learned in working with children. When you do something that's "hands on", they remember it for a very long time! And you even went an extra step with them. I can't imagine that it didn't leave a mark on each of them!

@CRK109 I like to think I did. I enjoyed doing hands on projects with them. It raised their confidence in themselves.

Your project was a wonderful way to reach and teach those kids. I wish projects like that were still allowed. At least here in NC, such "frivolous" uses of time are actively discouraged.

They don't allow it here anymore either. I have been very disappointed in the way education seems to be going these days The fun seems to be tae3n out of learning.

unfortunately they were not learning it at home. They weren't learning anything about how to live around others.
