Couldn't get the car started as the battery died

Awhile back, I was leaving for church, and I couldn't get the car started. I knew it was the battery, as it didn't even turn over.
It happened when my ex husband and I had gone to our son's for Thanksgiving. We left after night, so of course we had the car lights on. I had him drive the car, as I don't see to well to drive at night.
When we got back home into the garage, I thought he had turned the lights off, but he didn't. I am not blaming him mind you as I should have looked nd checked to see.
I just took it for granted that the lights were off, so it had been a couple of days that it had been used. If I had only checked, the battery wouldn't have died.
Anyway, I texted my son and told him I wouldn't be to church because the car wouldn't start.
He had called me the next morning that he would be coming to the house to check out my car to see if it were the battery or not, but I figured it was, as it did nothing.
He wanted me to check under the hood to see how many cylinder the battery is. When I raised up the hood, there was no battery.
The type of car I have, the battery is under the back seat on the passenger side, which means he had to take the seat all the way out, and check the battery. He put his jumper cables on it, thinking that it might have enough juice to get it started, but it did not.
It wouldn't stay charged, so he went to Les Schawab in my area, and got a new battery and put it in for me. I am so thankful that I have a son that is willing to help me when I need it.

The car is a 2004, so the battery was over 10 years old, so it had a very good life.

@Juliaacv You are so right. He has always told me that he would help me when he can, but I don't always ask him to, as I know he is busy as he has is own painting business and he works hard at it . I feel that him helping me is payback for being there for him. Karma as I call it.

It was starting up perfectly though before the lights were left on, and then poof, it just decided to bite the dust. It is okay though, as it would have happened sooner or later anyway, and beings the car was in the garage, and not stuck out on the road somewhere, makes it much better, as that would have been awful to be stranded on the road and the car battery die. Now, I have a new battery, that will last for awhile since it is new. I just have to make sure that the lights are off at all times, when I am not using it.

@LadyDuck I think that because of the fact I don't drive it every day, it lasted a lot longer than most batteries do. I am glad of that too, as I really got a lot of life out of it. Maybe the new one will last just as long or longer than the other one.. That certainly would be great if it did.

our car is now a slow 'starter' ever since it had a major overhaul. now, i have to switch on the car (battery) about 15-20 times to heat the engine up. i don't start the car everyday, a suggestion told by the person who repaired our car. stubborn me...

@ridingbet The battery seemed to out live itself, as it lasted more than 10 years, as it was the original battery. I just have never run the care down the road everyday, and I think that is why. I only use the car when I have to. I am not going to waste gas if I don't have to either. I am just glad it happened when and where it did.

@rosekiss wow, your battery lasted for 10 years? or car batteries here have a life time of only 1-3 years.

@chrissbergstrom It shouldn't as long as I make sure that the lights are all off and I take care of it and not get into any accidents or anything like that. I never drive far with it though, so I should be okay.

I knew it would happen eventually, as it was getting old,. However, it never showed signs of it at all, as the car always started up right away, with no problem, and I am thankful for that. I just happened to be in the right place at the right time, that my son could come and help me, and for that I will always be grateful.

I have never heard of a battery being under the back seat before, but that is where it is alright. My ex husband has a car where the battery is in the wheel well. Can't figure that one out either. When I raised the hood, and saw there was no battery under the hood, I couldn't figure out where it could possibly be. I know now though.

Yea I know, but at least I don't have to worry about it going out on me anytime soon. You are right though, that they seem to be putting batteries everywhere else except under the hood, where they should go. This is the first car that I have had that had the battery somewhere else beside under the hood. I don't understand why they are doing that either.

It is always better to have a new battery instead of refilling this with fluid.

The battery probably wouldn't have lasted all that much longer anyway, so it is good it happened when it did, and being home in garage, was better yet. I would have hated to be out on the road and it happen.
