Awhile back I did a book review for "Once a Rancher" by Linda Lael Miller. I posted it here. I don't usually read romance novels but once in awhile I like to disappear in a romance novel. And I certainly don't care for cowboy books. Why? I don't know.
"Once a Rancher" is the first book in Miller's new cowboy romance novel series called The Carsons of Mustang Creek. It's a book I won in a giveaway. I enjoyed it and just knew I had to get the next book. There are three brothers - Slater, Drake and Mace. The first book is Slater's story, the second is Drake's story and there is a third one - "Forever a Hero" - which is Mace's story. And then there is a Christmas Carson story.
My daughter read the first book after I did. She liked it so I bought the second one for her for Christmas. I read it before her. I just finished it. And, you know what I'm going to say, don't you? Come on, say it with me, I have ordered the third book, the youngest brother Mace's story.
Focusing on "Always a Cowboy", I have to say that the story is, well, unrelateable. Stuff like this doesn't happen in real life. PEOPLE like these don't exist in real life. But that's the point of fiction sometimes, especially romance novels. They take you to a place that is pretty much a fantasy. That's why we read them. Is Drake the most romantic guy in the world? Not really. But I liked him. And his love interest? Luce was not someone I could relate to at all. But that's okay.
I know authors write novels for their readers so they can relate to them to some extent. That's not necessarily true for romance novels. I'm not Luce but I can't say I wouldn't want a Drake in my life (or a Slater).
I thought the romance happened way too swiftly in "Always a Cowboy". Maybe because I read the book so fast.
But I do hear so many stories about real life couples who met and married very soon after so it DOES happen.
"Always a Cowboy" is a hot romance, without being sexually descriptive. I gave it 4 stars out of 5.

Thanks for the review. I use to read a lot of romances; however, now read many mysteries. I like food mystery authors like Joanne Fluke.

I love romance movies but not sure if I've ever read a romance book... At least I cannot recall doing so. Good review of the book.

@patgalca This is true. A lot of "cosy mysteries" have elements of romance to them.

I can't recall if I've read any of Linda Lael Miller's books, but I do enjoy a good romance story.
