BA Short-haul Cancellations into London Heathrow

On this drizzly Monday, I wonder what the repercussions of the weekend of travel misery inflicted by British Airways on its customers will be. A calamitous sequence of events stemming, allegedly, from a "power surge" sometime on Saturday 27th May resulted in widespread cancellation of British Airways flights from 2 major London airports this weekend, starting around 10am on Saturday, with some short-haul flights to London Heathrow still being cancelled on Monday afternoon.
Chief executive Alex Cruz says flight disruption at Heathrow and Gatwick had nothing to do with cost cutting.

Can only imagine the mess this is now at this time. Wonder why they think the boss should resign. Did he do this? Hmmm So many angry people I bet. BA will be doling out the money for this event for sure.

Estimates are upwards of 100,000,000 Euros will need to be paid out, presuming those whose travel plans were disrupted chose to rebook with the same airline.

People demand the stupidest things sometimes. And the press exacerbates it. And the people on the Board hear it... ...and so it goes.

I had not heard this news. It looks like a major failure, but I do not see why the boss would be responsible for this. BA will get more booking in 2 years : I read this weekend that Air France and Lufthansa were considering to not deserve anymore UK airports after the Brexit.

@pgntwo The problem is that they do not know how they will be treated after the Brexit. All EU companies have to follow the same rules when an incident like this one happens (this power surge, like a strike) and to refund and pay damages to the passengers. They fear that UK companies would not have to do it anymore, at least for flights from an UK airport, and it would make a significant difference for the price of the ticket.

AF and LH would be unlikely to sever their current service to the UK, it would not make any sense. BA is owned by a Spanish parent company in any case, which makes matters post-Brexit somewhat cloudy in regard to the UK's national flag carrier.

@topffer Uncertainty, yes. I cannot see the price of tickets on UK-based airlines dropping after a successful Brexit. What about non EU-airlines, are they cheaper, and are they less bound to pay for such disruptions, I wonder?

I saw a video where a gentleman was calling for the resignation of the BA CEO because of this calamity. So people are still being displaced even today? That's horrendous!

@pgntwo That would be very frustrating to me. I hope they can get it all sorted by tomorrow. I imagine, however, that they've lost a lot of customers over this.

@ScribbledAdNauseum At this time, I cannot see any cancellations for short-haul flights from Heathrow, so hopefully everyone and all aircraft are positioned appropriately. However, large numbers of bags/cases that had to be left behind will take a while longer to reunite with the respective owners, I suspect.

I have read the news and now it seems they are facing a very high cost for damages.

@pgntwo I fully agree, it seems that this matter was not fixed in the most appropriate way.

They have no idea. Whatever the cost, a better disaster recovery plan may have been cheaper...

could it be because of that terrorist attack in UK?

Unlikely, I think, given Manchester is a long way from London.

@pgntwo terrorists have their own quarters to communicate about the attacks that they do.

What a bummer, I'm so glad I don't like to fly ..... if my car breaks down I can blame either myself or the manufacturer.

Things happen due to human error and now we know many things happen due to electronics, equipment, etc. Should there always be someone there to take the blame? Maybe not @pgntwo

I was certainly glad not to be travelling with BA this weekend. It's a bit worrying how reliant we've become on computers, isn't it?

It certainly is. People have forgotten how to do it on paper - and the size of some aircraft does not help. Even the flight crew rely on tablet PCs for weight and balance and such...

@pgntwo Maybe I'll take a Cruz next time instead of a BA flight.

Thankfully, bus journeys are not quite so choreographed.
